Over 52 million early votes cast in US election, putting country on pace for biggest turnout in over a century

 

A record-shattering 52 million Americans have already submitted their ballots with 11 days still to go until the November 3 presidential election, according to data collected by the US Elections Project.

 

That figure already exceeds the total number of early votes registered in the 2016 election, which, at just over 47 million, was previously touted as the highest early vote total in US history.

 

Michael McDonald, the University of Florida professor behind the US Elections Project, estimates that, based on current data, the total turnout will exceed 150 million people, smashing the previous record of 137.5 million set in 2016.

 

Based on an update we'll be releasing later today, we're now projecting total turnout in the presidential race to be 154 million, with an 80th percentile range between 144 million and 165 million. In 2016, turnout was 137 million, by comparison.

EU lawmakers vote for ‘veggie burgers’ & ‘vegan sausages,’ rejecting demands by farmers

 

Plant-based products sold in the EU should be allowed to be called ‘burgers,’ ‘sausages,’ and ‘steak,’ despite containing no meat at all, the European Parliament said.

 

On Friday, the MEPs voted to reject the proposal by farmers, who insisted that labeling vegetarian substitutes with terms that are usually associated with meat products was misleading to consumers. Continuing this practice would open a “Pandora’s box” of confusing wording, European farmers association Copa-Cogeca warned.

 

“I’m going to celebrate with a vegan burger,” Jytte Guteland, an EU lawmaker from Sweden, said, after her colleagues decided to leave the terms ‘veggie burgers,’ ‘vegan sausages’ and ‘soy steaks’ on restaurant menus and shop shelves across Europe.

 

The European Consumer Organization (BEUC) also rejoiced over the decision, praising MEPs for their “common sense.” The group shared the stance of Greenpeace, the World Wide Fund for Nature, and other environmental organizations that the promotion of plant-based products was in line with EU policies to stop global warming.

Russia May Launch Trial Digital Rouble in Late 2021

 

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Russia may launch a digital rouble pilot at the end of next year, Russian Central Bank Governor Elvira Nabiullina reported.

 

According to the head of the Russian Central Bank, the prospects for introducing a digital rouble in the near future are very real. However, before launching the pilot programme, the Bank of Russia will be collecting feedback until the end of this year. It will then analyse it and prepare a concept.

 

We believe that there must be a trial period among a limited number of users to work out all the kinks and get an understanding of how it works. We believe this pilot project is possible at some point at the end of next year, and when we get those results, we will be able to move forward", Nabiullina noted.

 

Responding to a question on how feasible the launch of a digital rouble is in the near future, Nabiullina said that it is "within reach".

Blast Causes Fire at Petrochemical Plant in Southwest Iran, Reports Say

 

There have been several cases of fires and explosions in recent months in Iran, including a blast in the Razi industrial estate in Shahreza county on 3 October that left one person dead, state news agency IRNA reported.

 

An explosion has hit a petrochemical plant in the Iranian city of Bandar Mahshahr, causing a major fire, state media reported.

 

Firefighters have already contained the fire, according to unconfirmed information. No casualties have been reported so far.

 

Videos allegedly showing the fire with black fumes rising to the sky have emerged online.
