POTUS giving the Lumbee Tribe (of Robeson County, North Carolina) the status of being Federally recognized would be yuge.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs appears to be a pay for play scheme - in order to be federally recognized, tribes have to hire historians and attorneys (some spend over 1 million dollars!) and after submitting voluminous paperwork, wait years or decades for the BIA to designate the tribe ‘Federally recognized’, if at all. Tribes who fail to produce proper paperwork have to refile/resubmit and wait that much longer. I think the Lumbee have waited decades with no resolution.
I wonder if POTUS will clean house at the BIA and simplify the Federal recognition process, making it faster and much less costly.
