Exactly this is what religions do, and is the control system as you properly described it. Spirituality, however, is purely an inner discipline with wonderful outward consequences, it requires exactly no external idols, only love and wisdom. Exposure to certain information can lead you there, or not, as (somewhat ironically) this passage from the Bible says:

Matthew 7:6

“Do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you in pieces."

There is a fine line between knowing and respecting the Unity and Oneness of All, and falling victim to the predatory ego who exploits this sacred connection as a means to separate himself from others and proclaim his distorted vision of "godhood" as the only form of divinity. (some parts of the Bible have this, eg. angry "god" threatening demonic hellfire, LOL)

The basis of ego is always separation. Being special in some way. If you find yourself at the top of the world, above all others at one moment, then suddenly self-pitying as the worst, poorest being on the whole lonely world at the next gust of wind, that's ego talk and little else.

Nah, it's just identifying ETs by their alignment. Those who are close to our Creator recognize our brotherhood and have a desire to help, those who are away from our Creator see this as a biomass/loosh/resource extraction site.
