Extinction Rebellion activists block entrance to oil refinery in Scotland accused of ‘ecocide’

Protesters belonging to the climate change activism group Extinction Rebellion have attempted to blockade access to an oil refinery in Grangemouth, Scotland, claiming that the plant’s operator is the country’s biggest polluter.

Demonstrators used two boats to block two roads leading to the Ineos plant and the company’s headquarters. A small group of protesters also chained themselves together at the gates of the refinery, telling local media that they plan to block the entrance to the plant until at least the end of the day.

Photographs posted to social media by the group show demonstrators marching down a road holding large banners reading “Climate justice = Social justice” and “Stop Ineos ecocide.”

The boats used to block the roads were also used to relay Extinction Rebellion’s (XR) grim ecological forecast. “The future you fear is already here,” warned a message painted on one of the vessels.

The radical environmental group, known for its theatrical protests and headline-grabbing acts of civil disobedience, claims that the petrochemical manufacturer is Scotland’s largest polluter. The Ineos site is Scotland’s only crude oil refinery.

Annie Lane, 26, an activist from Glasgow, told the media that XR was blockading the Ineos plant to “expose the climate destruction” that the company is allegedly causing, claiming that the world was “running out of time” to take action to prevent an environmental catastrophe.

A police spokesman said that law enforcement personnel were on site and were liaising with the protest organizers. He confirmed that two roads had been blocked and asked drivers to avoid the area.

A similar protest was held by XR activists in Switzerland last month, when several hundred protesters occupied the square in front of the country’s parliament building in Bern, and chained themselves to objects to prevent police from forcibly removing them.

Representative Bradley Byrne (R-AL) once was apprehensive about regulating tech giants, like Facebook and Twitter. However, the latest episode involving the suppression of a New York Post story has made the Alabama congressman rethink his standing on that issue.

During an appearance on Mobile, AL radio’s FM Talk 106.5, Byrne said Facebook and Twitter “crossed the line” with their actions, which he said meant a new understanding about what they are.

“You’ve asked me questions about all of this before, and I’ve always been very reticent to want to have any regulations,” he said. “I’m sort of a free market guy, free idea guy. They’ve crossed the line now, so they’ve lost me. I don’t support that sort of protection for them anymore. I think we’re going to have to start regulation them as what they are. And I think everybody in society needs to understand these are not free and open platforms. These are censored platforms. And they’re censored to try and keep one set of ideas out and push another set of ideas. We ought to all understand that. I mean, I don’t personally get my information from either Twitter or Facebook. But I think anybody that is getting their information from either of those two platforms needs to start looking around for a better way to get information.”

“We have treated them since their inception as just platforms for various things to go in and out of,” Byrne continued. “But they’re not. They’re actually regulating what comes in and what goes out. They don’t have free and open use of it. So, at that point, we have to regulate them as something completely different than what they at least pretended to be up until this point. And like I say, I’m a free market, open [guy]. I don’t like a lot of regulations. And I don’t like regulation of ideas. But when they’re that big and they have that much control on things, I don’t think we have a choice but to get involved with them. So they have lost me. They probably have lost a lot of people like me who were always reticent before. Now, we’re no longer reticent. We’re ready to go get them.”

Major Italian Cities Risk Lockdown ‘Red Zone’ Status as Coronavirus Cases Surge

Four highly-populated Italian cities are at risk of being declared “red zones” and put into strict lockdowns as new daily Wuhan coronavirus cases surge.

Lockdowns could soon be implemented in Rome, Genoa, Naples, and Milan, the latter seeing 1,858 new Wuhan coronavirus cases in just 24 hours. Genoa, meanwhile, has seen the most positive infections in relation to the total number of tests.

Walter Ricciardi, a consultant to the Italian Minister of Health, said several metropolitan areas are out of control in terms of the spread of the virus, newspaper Il Giornale reports.

“Milan must take the necessary measures, including possibly becoming a red zone,” Ricciardi said.

What sort of lockdown measures will be implemented if the cities become “red zones” remains unclear. Earlier in the year, such areas had travel bans as well as strict orders for residents to stay in their homes, except for necessary travel, with businesses forced to close.

Italians demonstrated against the strict lockdown measures as they carried on for months. The unrest led to the government opening certain businesses weeks ahead of schedule.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Italy saw a daily new case record on Friday, October 23rd, with 16,0778 cases reported. Daily deaths from the disease, however, are far below the record of 971 on March 28th.

Italy is not the only country seeing a surge in cases in recent weeks. Many European countries have been forced to introduce measures, such as curfews, to deal with the spread of coronavirus as some countries see record-high numbers of new daily patients.

While some countries have enacted curfews, the Czech Republic has put lockdown measures in place, including mandatory mask-wearing outside and has closed nearly all shops except supermarkets, pharmacies, and select others.

Escape from Wales: UK Police Set Up Checkpoints with Lockdown Region

An English police force has set up roadblocks along parts of the border with Wales to question people leaving during the lockdown. If drivers do not give a sufficient reason for travel and refuse to turn around, officers will inform their Welsh counterparts.

Wales went into a 17-day so-called “fire-break” lockdown on Friday after seeing a rise in coronavirus cases, with 1,756 dying of the virus in the country of three million. Measures include a ban on non-essential travel. Gloucestershire Police, an English force in a border county with the Celtic nation, said that they will stop any vehicles they suspect are making unnecessary journeys out of Wales.

“While we cannot issue fines to those travelling from Wales into the county we can inform the host force of those we stop about what has happened so they can take action.

“Officers will be running an operation from tomorrow [24 October] and over the weekend that will cover routes from Wales into the Forest of Dean and if we stop someone travelling from Wales we will be encouraging them to turn around if we are not satisfied with their explanation,” a spokesman from the force told ITV on Friday.

The Associated Press reported on Saturday that another English police force bordering Wales, West Mercia, said it will also be working with its Welsh counterparts to “enforce, where necessary, the relevant rules for the area we serve”.

While the Welsh force, Gwent Police, began road patrols last night, stopping ten “vehicles of interest” and issuing six fines for breach of the Welsh government’s coronavirus lockdown.

People from outside Wales are also being discouraged from entering the country.

The fire-break lockdown also sees pubs, restaurants, gyms, and ‘non-essential’ shops closed. Only shops that sell food, pharmacies, and off-licences may remain open. However, a controversial caveat is that food shops are not allowed to sell so-called ‘non-essential’ items either, seeing supermarkets cordon off whole areas of their stores to stop customers in Wales buying certain products.

Media have reported Welshmen’s incredulity at the items that have been deemed ‘non-essential’, including bedding, cooking tools, eating utensils, adult clothing, and even baby clothes.

Wales’s first minister, Mark Drakeford, claimed that the ban would offer a “level playing field” for the smaller businesses that he forced to shut, effectively meaning that if you cannot buy an electric kettle at a small retailer, you will not be allowed to buy them at a large one in Wales, either.

Big Government Bans Supermarkets from Selling ‘Non Essentials’ in Lockdown Wales

Wales’s First Minister Mark Drakeford has said that supermarkets will not be able to sell ‘non-essential’ goods like clothing during a 17-day lockdown.

From 6 pm on Friday to midnight on November 9th, Wales will see many retailers close, apart from shops which sell food like supermarkets, as well as pharmacies and off-licences.

There had been a complaint in the Welsh parliament that clothing shops and hardware stores had to close, while supermarkets were still open to sell similar products. The Welsh leader’s solution was, instead of allowing those shops to remain open, to ban larger retailers from selling ‘non-essentials’ entirely.

Claiming the move would create a “level playing field” for small businesses, Mr Drakeford said on Thursday according to the BBC: “We will be making it clear to supermarkets that they are only able to open those parts of their business that provide essential goods to people.”

Andrew RT Davies, a Conservative member of the Welsh assembly, responded to the announcement by saying that “the power is going to their heads,” mocking the Labour-led regional government by asking: “Is a flagon of Strongbow deemed essential? What about some much-needed underpants if you’re caught short?”

Former Conservative Member of European Parliament (MEP) Daniel Hannan also remarked on the bizarre rule, saying: “How is this supposed to slow the infection rate? Or is it just some weird Labour anti-capitalist thing?”

Senior Tory MP Tom Tugendhat said: “There’s a difference between giving advice to keep people safe and trying to take over our lives. This is a step too far. What gives the Labour Party the right to decide what families need?”

The Times‘s Grant Tucker reported an image on Twitter of a Tesco supermarket in Pontypool covering so-called ‘non-essentials’ with plastic sheets, some of which appears to be bedding — essential items as the weather changes and nights become colder.

The move is reminiscent of the overjealous policing of shoppers during the UK’s nationwide shutdown in March, with one police force threatening to check people’s shopping baskets to make sure they were not buying ‘non-essential’ items. The leading police officer who made the remarks later apologised and claimed they had simply used “clumsy” language.

Convenience stores also complained of being harassed by police for selling Easter eggs, because they were ‘non-essential’. One police force even summonsed for offences a group of people from the same household going to the shops “for non-essential items”.

Covid-19: Poland President Duda tests positive for virus

Polish President Andrzej Duda has contracted Covid-19 but is feeling "good", he says.

Mr Duda, 48, was tested on Friday and found to be positive, but it is not clear when he contracted the virus.

He joins a handful of world leaders who have been ill with Covid-19, among them US President Donald Trump and UK PM Boris Johnson.

Poland faces a surge in the coronavirus pandemic, with a daily record of more than 13,600 new cases on Friday.

The country has now entered a nationwide "red zone" lockdown that includes the partial closure of primary schools and restaurants.

Mr Duda attended an event in the Estonian capital, Tallinn, on Monday where he met Bulgarian President Rumen Radev who later went into quarantine. He also met Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid, who has since tested negative.

"I didn't have and I don't have any symptoms, especially the serious ones like lack of taste or lack of smell, but the result of the test is absolutely clear," Mr Duda said in a video message posted on Twitter.

"I feel good right now. I will spend the upcoming days in self-isolation along with my wife and I will be working remotely; it's not a problem at all."

Presidential minister Blazej Spychalski, who first gave details of the president's positive test, has himself tested positive and is going into quarantine.

On Friday, Mr Duda visited a field hospital under construction at the National Stadium in the Polish capital, Warsaw. Pictures show the president wearing a face mask while meeting workers at the site.

He also met 19-year-old tennis star Iga Swiatek, winner of the French Open this year, to award her the Gold Cross of Merit for achievements in sport.

"Neither I nor members of my team have symptoms of coronavirus. We carry out tests regularly. We will quarantine ourselves in accordance with current procedures," Ms Swiatek said in a Twitter post (tweet in Polish).

The second wave of infections is hitting Poland hard, with the number of new cases 22 times higher than the highest number of cases in the spring, although testing is now more prevalent.

The number of hospital beds in use by coronavirus patients rose by 6.5% on Friday to 11,496, which means 60% of the total available are now filled.

Under the new restrictions, gatherings of more than five are banned, and children must be accompanied by an adult when outdoors. People aged over 70 are being urged to stay at home.

Chelsea Handler Scolds Rapper 50 Cent For Supporting Trump: ‘I Had To Remind Him That He Was A Black Person’

Chelsea Handler has been angry with 50 Cent all week, after the rapper twice told his 12.3 million Twitter followers to vote for President Donald Trump due to Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden’s tax plan.

Handler, who is white, told “The Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon that she “had to remind [50 Cent] that he was a black person, so he can’t vote for Donald Trump.”

“So he doesn’t want to pay 62 percent in taxes because he doesn’t want to go from ’50 Cent’ to ’20 Cent’ and I had to remind him that he was a Black person, so he can’t vote for Donald Trump and that he shouldn’t be influencing an entire swath of people who may listen to him because he’s worried about his own personal pocketbook,“ Handler told the host.

The feud began earlier in the week when 50 Cent, whose real name is Curtis James Jackson III, posted about the consequences of Biden’s tax plan, which CNBC reported would result in tax rates of more than 60% for people in California and New York who earn more than $400,000 annually.

“In California, New Jersey and New York City, taxpayers earning more than $400,000 a year could face combined state and local statutory income tax rates of more than 60%,” the outlet reported.

“Under Biden’s plan, the effective tax rate for the top 1% would increase from 26.8% to 39.8%, according to the Tax Policy Center,” CNBC reported. “That means top earners in California and New York City would pay effective state and federal tax rates of around 53% — compared with the roughly 40% they pay in effective rates today. What’s more, if the Democrats win the Senate and can pass legislation removing the $10,000 cap on state and local tax deductions, the combined state and local tax rates for top earners could be even lower.”

The report suggested, however, that if Democrats retake the Senate, they could remove a $10,000 cap on state and local tax deductions – an improbable move for the party – that would decrease the tax rates for top earners.

50 Cent was appalled by the report, writing on Monday, ““WHAT THE F! (VOTE ForTRUMP). I’M OUT. F NEW YORK The KNICKS never win anyway.”

“I don’t care Trump doesn’t like black people,” he added, “62% are you out of ya f***ing mind,” he added.

The rapper doubled down on Tuesday, tweeting, ““Yeah, I don’t want to be 20cent. 62% is a very, very bad idea. I don’t like it.”

Days later, Handler made her remarks to Fallon. As Fox News noted, the incident is reminiscent of the time in May when Biden told radio host Charlamagne tha God’s audience that “you ain’t black” unless you vote for him.

“If you have a problem figuring out whether you’re for me or Trump, then you ain’t black,” Biden said at the time.

And even though the bank’s actual credit risk is significantly lower than the national value of its derivatives contracts, there is still a scandalous amount of exposure that can be very well illustrated when we consider the state of Deutsche Bank’s balance sheet.

According to the Financial Times, the German institution is coping with a shocking number of regulatory actions and lawsuits – 7,000 to be more precise. The New York Times, Washington Post and other of the press prostitutes tried to discredit the story with the fake news that it was Russian disinformation to help Trump win the election. National Public Radio refused to mention the story other than to brand it a story that is not really a story, simply a waste of “listeners’ and readers’ time on stories that are just pure distractions.” [1] NPR, of course, was all into distractions that wasted readers’ and listeners’ time on Russiagate and Impeachgate and wasted President Trump’s entire term.

The problem with the press prostitutes’ attempted coverup of the Bidens’ crooked dealings is that the FBI has Hunter Biden’s laptops, and both the FBI and the Department of Justice agree with the statement of John Ratcliffe, Director of National Intelligence, that the emails are the real stuff and not a Russian operation to interfere in the November election. The emails contain a list of “key domestic contacts” for the influence peddling scheme. Are The Chinese One Step Away From Putting Their Man In The White House While The FBI Worries About Iranian Spam Mail?

In fact, just today a former business partner of Jim Biden and Hunter Biden, Tony Bobulinski – a former U.S. naval officer – confirmed that he was the recipient of one of the emails from the alleged Hunter Biden laptop and has stated that the “Big Man” referred to in the email as getting 10% of the $10 million payment from a Chinese company is indeed former vice-president Joe Biden.

Throughout the entire Democratic Party’s primary process the FBI had this laptop, filled with evidence of Joe Biden’s potential illicit dealings with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in its possession. It said nothing. It apparently did nothing. As Americans all over the country went to the polls and party leaders deliberated and a man, who may well be a real-life Manchurian candidate, moved ever closer to securing the Democratic Party nomination to be President of the United States, the FBI kept the evidence in its possession under wraps?

Trump hasn't asked Barr to open investigation into Bidens, McEnany says

President Trump has not asked Attorney General William Barr to open an investigation into the Biden family, White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said Friday, despite his comments earlier in the week urging the attorney general to look into the matter.

"No he has not. The president wants these things to be looked into, and the media is really the avenue that should be doing that at this point," McEnany told reporters.

"It's up to the attorney general as to how he pursues this, and the FBI, but we just want justice and we want the American people to have a full picture of what's at stake," she added.

Trump on Tuesday called on Barr to promptly look into Hunter Biden, the son of Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, over unproven corruption allegations.

"We've got to get the attorney general to act. He's got to act and he's got to act fast," Trump said on Fox News. "He's got to appoint somebody. This is major corruption and this has to be known about before the election."

White House chief of staff Mark Meadows said Wednesday that assigning a special prosecutor to the case "has merit," but he downplayed that it is a pressing matter in the White House and shot down the prospect of any findings coming out before Election Day.

The president and his campaign have leaned hard into attacks on Hunter Biden, citing text messages and correspondence that they claim show Joe Biden was aware of his son's foreign business dealings. But there is no evidence that Joe Biden was involved while he was vice president or that it influenced policy, and The Wall Street Journal reported late Thursday that documents show Joe Biden did not have any role in his son's business interests.

The Trump campaign hosted a guest at Thursday's debate who claimed Joe Biden was aware of his son's business dealings in 2017. The man, Tony Bobulinski, said he would cooperate with the FBI and Republican senators looking into the matter.

Fears mount as South Korea probes cause behind 36 people's deaths after flu vaccination

SEOUL - Public concern over the safety of flu shots has grown in South Korea as the authorities reported 36 cases of deaths after vaccination as at 1pm on Friday (Oct 23), putting strain on their efforts to curb a potential "twindemic" of winter flu and the coronavirus.

The country is still grappling with the Covid-19 pandemic, reporting 155 Covid-19 cases on Friday - the highest since Sept 11 and the second day in a row that the number hit triple figures. This brings the total to 25,698.

Health authorities now also have to tackle a deepening fear of the state-administered free flu vaccine programme after two batches of vaccine were found faulty since last month.

South Korea hopes to inoculate some 19 million people for free, especially vulnerable groups such as young children and the elderly, ahead of the annual flu season starting in November when temperatures drop.

No causal link has been found yet between the flu shots and the fatalities so far, and investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the deaths.

It remains unknown how a 17-year-old boy living in Incheon died last Friday - two days after getting a free flu shot, making him the first case.

South Korea's forensic agency said it has found no direct link between his death and the flu shot.

But it is alarming how the number of similar deaths has since spiked, with 18 alone reported on Thursday, and nine more on Friday.

Most of the fatalities are elderly people with underlying medical conditions.

A woman in her 80s living in the southern port city of Busan died on Friday after being taken to the hospital for breathing difficulties. She had gone to a hospital in the nearby city of Daegu four days ago for treatment of a chronic disease, but was given a flu shot on the doctor's advice.

The police said she probably died of cardiovascular issues, but an autopsy will be performed to confirm if her death is related to the flu vaccine.

Jeffrey Epstein told Ghislaine Maxwell to offer a reward to anyone who could doubt Virginia Roberts after she blamed them of rape, newly freed court records from a 2016 deposition show.

In 2015, Roberts indicted Epstein and Maxwell alleging they had slandered her by calling her a liar in her public allegations against them which included that they had sexually trafficked her to, among other people, Prince Andrew.

After she listed the lawsuit, Epstein and Maxwell tried to crush her claims by discrediting her.

In an email dated January 12 2015, Epstein told Maxwell: "You can issue a reward to any of Virginia's friends, aquaints, (sic) family, that come forward to help prove her allegations are false.

"The strongest is the dinner and the new version of the Virgin Islands that practiced in an underage orgy."

Maxwell rejected giving anyone a reward for trying to discredit Roberts, answering "absolutely not" when queried.

Four years earlier, after Roberts claimed in an interview that she had slept with Prince Andrew when she was 17, a claim he has regularly denied ever since, Maxwell and Epstein discussed their media response.

"We should think about the letter to the editor. School can be a university. Age of consent in Florida is complex," the email said.

It's unclear if those are Maxwell's remarks or if they were written by someone else and she forwarded the email on to Epstein.

The document says: "It's dated Friday March 11, 2011 from Maxwell to Jeffrey with the title, Daily Mail and there is a forward from [redacted] to you and a number of other individuals, that's on the cover page."

The email, written by someone else, went on: "If you are 16 years old, a sexual relationship with someone between 18 and 24 is legal in Florida. Two persons between 16 and 24, Florida statute 794.05. A person 24 years or of age or older who engages in sexual

activity with a person 16 or 17 years of age commits a felony in the second degree.

"So as soon as you turn 16 you are able to Have sexual relations and you can have sexual relations with a minor under the age of 18 until your 24th birthday."

Maxwell said that she was not "concerned" with the legality of the age but with the person who sent her the email, that she then forwarded to Epstein, was trying to be "helpful". "Virginia in '11 was claiming she was 15 and we thought she was 17. I didn't know what the statutes were in Florida and I think he was just trying to be helpful so I would know," she told the lawyers in the deposition.

Palestinians sue Britain for 1917 Balfour Declaration that led to creation of Israel

Palestinian lawyers have lodged a complaint to sue the British government for the 1917 Balfour Declaration, which set out London’s aim to establish a national home for the Jewish people in Palestine.

On Thursday, the lawyers took the measure in the occupied northern West Bank city of Nablus, highlighting that “the suffering of the Palestinians” emanated from the UK document.

“The Balfour Declaration is unacceptable. It was not just a declaration, but a birth certificate for a regime with letters of shame and injustice. It was a replacement tactic drawn by Britain in partnership with Zionists, ignoring the rights of more than 93% of Palestinian people, and granting the Jews, who at the time composed only 7% of the population, full rights,” Munib al-Masri, head of the Federation of Independent and Democratic Trade Unions, told a news conference in Ramallah.

Joe Biden's brother Jim wrote a 2017 'wish list' of possible business contacts for their new venture, according to the New York Post - a list that included prominent Democrats, Republicans, world leaders and international business people.

The list was reportedly sent in an email to Tony Bobulinski, Hunter Biden's former business partner in a failed Chinese investment venture.

At the time the email was supposedly sent, Joe Biden was the former vice president, a private citizen, who had not yet declared his intention to run for office. Joe Biden is not mentioned in his brother's emails, the Post reported.

Jim Biden emailed Bobulinski, Hunter Biden and several others on May 15, 2017 with the list of suggested contacts, the paper claimed.

The Bidens and Bobulinski had formed a company to partner with another firm, headed by a Chinese energy tycoon, on 'global and/or domestic' projects involving 'infrastructure, energy, financial services and other strategic sectors,' the documents obtained by the Post reportedly show.

Others on that list reportedly included the presidents of Colombia and Argentina, and the 'European Union in general.'

The following day, Hunter Biden, according to the paper, responded to Jim's email and expressed concern, worrying: 'that these lists of contacts and strengths are going to come back to haunt us.'

Hunter Biden reportedly suggested the lists 'could easily serve… as the foundation for the divvying up of territory both geographically and commercially' by their partner in the joint venture.

'I may be paranoid but having worked in. [sic] The lobbying industry for years these attempts to create focus at the outset always and I mean always ended in disaster,' the email says, according to the Post.

'We should be thinking what we want to focus on and not who knows who as direction for focus in my opinion.'

Donald Trump has seized upon the emails from Bobulinski, and others from a laptop that Hunter Biden took to be repaired, as supposed evidence of the Biden family's corruption.

Joe Biden during Thursday night's debate vehemently denied having ever taken any money from foreign governments.

The Biden campaign insist that Trump is attempting to divert attention away from his own shortcomings, and Trump critics have suggested that it is part of a Russian-orchestrated disinformation plot.
