My family is catholic. I was going to be a priest, until I hit puberty. I was very seriously catholic until I read the bible for myself and learned the truth and history about the papacy.
You should try reading the bible, not books about the bible.
It took my family three generations to get away from it, so I know how powerful it is for some people.
The new testament explains the 10 commandments with the golden rule. The golden rule led to the common law, protestantism, the magna carta, the declaration of independence and eventually the bill of rights. Aka civilization. The opposite of the papacy, past and present. Sorry to say.
God's word is present, Gods plan is unfolding. Don't live in the past.

Truth is self evident, even if it comes from cartoons.
The bible is our history. It led to the western way of life.
