Well… Back in the day, WAY BACK there were things called BBs's Your phone would be hooked into a cradle that would "talk" through the microphone to a modem on the other side. You could then access a Bulletin Board System (kinda like here but no pics except for ascii. Anyway it was a rudimentary internet. Also spawned a tool called a Wardialer that called numbers looking for computers to connect to.
