Been thinking about this as well.
I found 2 paths:
1 - reincarnation
2 - longevity of life = living for 10s of thousand of years.
Both are possible. Both existed in the very distant past, but something happened that caused life to shorten. So now, they are trying to find a way to get back to living for 10s of thousand of years.
