maybe they've been set up to lose, over and over, because of their industrial/scientific genius? (i'm NOT german, btw.). as a university chem major in the 60s, i was REQUIRED to learn german, because virtually all of the significant scientific papers of the prior century were written in german. before WWII, germany was the technological and scientific powerhouse of the world, NOT the usa. we were barely on the radar.
