A chief justice is nominated by POTUS, the other associate justices do not take the chief justice's spot. A new chief justice is nominated and seated to fill the open seat.
The selection of a Chief Justice is only relevant as far as impeachment goes. All other matters have associate justices and chief justice on an equal standing.
