get one that does ssb correctly (ie, like a ham radio, not channelized like a cb, some of the exports do not do ssb with fine control of the frequencies because they do not use the correct circuit components for that. So you can't hit repeaters.
anything with a vco in it will work.
if it does not have a vco, it will not do ssb fine tuning.
the idea of not hitting repeaters is due to the channelization, which also effects ssb operation. it's two problems witht he same root cause.
normal am has two sidebands. the reason for adjusting frequencies finely is to be able to make one ssb am radio to be able to match frequencies with another.
This doesn't happen in dual sideband (normal am) mode.
because since there is no vco, the fm is also channeliuzed due to being a cheap microporcessor instead of a vco.
That's why a ham radio costs $1k and a cb radi costs 200 bux.
