Here is the thing about a good LARP. It pulls its story from a large constellation of benign historical data points. Data points that range from fact to a twisted exaggeration. People would just stipulate instead of checking. "Mostly true" as it were. Now you have set the stage for a sprinkle of spice and intrigue. Data points of fiction so outrageous if told by themselves would be immediately dismissed as ridiculous. You might not like accept chili pepper by itself, but mixed into a bigger dish it becomes delicious.
I have no idea if story is true. I assume it is not. Becareful though, the same technique turned inside out can make you think a fantastic true is fiction.
