Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. plans to close its maintenance and modification facility at Long Beach Airport, ending a 35-year run in the city as it shifts an estimated 700 jobs to Van Nuys and other parts of the country.
In an announcement posted Monday, Gulfstream said the move comes a year after the company invested in a new service center in Van Nuys and the expansion of facilities in Savannah, Georgia, and Appleton, Wisconsin.
Long Beach will experience a phased closure over the next six months, the company said, as work shifts to other locations. Gulfstream is offering displaced workers the opportunity to apply for positions elsewhere in the company with a focus on Van Nuys, Savannah and Appleton.
The aerospace firm also built new facilities in Palm Beach, Fla., and Farnborough, England, with plans to build an additional service center in the Fort Worth, Texas, area.
Gulfstream has maintained operations at Long Beach Airport since 1986. Its various buildings occupy 455,000 square feet and are housed on 22.5 acres. The Van Nuys facility, by contrast, is roughly 66,000 square feet. That includes 43,000 square feet of hangar space, enough to accommodate four Gulfstream G650ER or G650 aircraft.
