How long is a site that allows users to upload data to their storage servers (for free) expected to hold the users uploaded data?

For eternity?

If I was a data sharing/collection/storage site, why couldn't I delete any damn piece of data I want to delete at any time?

Would I be, or should I be, required by law to purchase billions of dollars worth of hardware, for eternity just to save text/photo/vide/shitposts made by users of my site?
