Today in 1938, the radio drama anthology series The Mercury Theatre on the Air broadcast its adaption of HG Wells’ The War of the Worlds. Famously, some listeners to the broadcast had missed that the production was fiction and dialed into the studio in a panic that Martians had indeed invaded the Earth.
