John Tory: All religions "contain the same fundamental underlying values"
00:23
"I had a meeting yesterday in the wake of these events, the anti-semitic and the anti-muslim events. I had a meeting of all the different faith leaders from every faith you could possibly imagine - I mean when I say everyone, there was like 40 people in the room, so there were 40 faiths represented there but I'm sure there are others. But we had 40 or 20, 35 faith leaders in the room and what they focused on was a couple of things I would say coming out of that meeting - and we're now going to take the list away - they focused on education."
01:44
"I mean the Koran and the Bible and the Torah and so on, if you look at those…they contain many of the same fundamental underlying values."

John Tory is Jewish, claims Israeli press
CBC
November 7, 2014
John Tory is Jewish, even though he is a member of the United Church.
This, is according an argument appearing in Friday's Times Of Israel newspaper. The article cites halacha, or Jewish law, to prove the Toronto mayor-elect's previously unreported heritage.
The ancestral link starts with Helen Yvonne Solomon, Tory's grandmother. With the help of the Ontario Jewish Archives, the newspaper dug up Solomon's birth certificate from 1909, which states she was born into a Russian Jewish family.
Jewish law states that the religion is passed down generations through the mother. So Tory's mother, Elizabeth Bacon, was a member of the faith, also by Jewish law.
Through his mother, Tory then would also be Jewish, by that rationale.
"Of course I knew that," said Tory when he was asked about the article.
He said he knew of "many, many Jewish relatives" in his bloodlines. He called himself proud of his ancestors.
Tory answered the questions as he opened up this year's Royal Winter Fair in Toronto.
If it is accepted that Tory is a member of the Jewish faith, the newspaper points out he would be the fourth Toronto mayor who identifies as Jewish. Nathan Phillips was the first Jewish mayor of Toronto (1955 to 1962), followed by Philip Givens (1963 to 1966) and most recently Mel Lastman (1998 to 2003).
Tory's mayoral opponent Doug Ford in the October election claimed his wife was Jewish, following the same religious laws of maternal heritage.

Mayor Doug Ford's wife, Karla Ford, is Jewish
Doug Ford announces 'my wife is Jewish' amid backlash over his use of Jewish stereotypes
Implications that Doug Ford and his brother are anti-Semitic prompted Mr. Ford to 'share something he hasn't shared before because he felt he needed to share it'

In an attempt to shelter himself from accusations of anti-Semitism following a Toronto mayoral debate, Doug Ford declared on Monday that his wife is Jewish.
With Rob Ford in the audience at Sunday’s debate, mayoral candidate Ari Goldkind grilled the Toronto mayor on his alleged use of “the K word,” an anti-Semitic slur.
Doug Ford came to his brother’s aid, riddling off examples of his family’s affinity for Jewish people.
“You know something? My doctor — my Jewish doctor, my Jewish dentist, my Jewish lawyer — Hold on, my Jewish accountant,” he said, before the audience booed and yelled, forcing the flustered Ford to stop mid-sentence.
“Our family has the utmost respect for the Jewish community.”
On Monday, Mr. Ford’s spokesman Jeff Silverstein called the statement “opportunistic,” saying it prompted Mr. Ford to “share something he hasn’t shared before because he felt he needed to share it.”
Ford told reporters that his wife, Karla, is Jewish on her mother’s side.
“As a matter of fact, my wife is Jewish. Her mother is Jewish. And they have to come after me? You’ve got to be joking,” Mr. Ford told reporters. “My wife was furious last night at Mr. Tory’s statement. It’s disgusting. It’s absolutely disgusting.”
Mr. Silverstein said he was unaware if Ms. Ford is “active in the Jewish community,” but said both her maternal grandparents were Jewish.
“I can say unequivocally that neither Doug nor Rob are anti-Semitic,” said Mr. Silverstein, who himself is Jewish. “If they were, I wouldn’t be there.”
The accusations of anti-Semitism brought up in Sunday’s debate stem back to a May Toronto Star report that quoted a recording of an inebriated Mayor Ford saying “Nobody sticks up for people like I do, every f—ing k–e, n—-r, f—ing w-p, d-go, whatever the race.”
“Mayor Ford, who has shown a tremendous amount of chutzpah for coming into this room tonight, may get a free pass from everybody else on this stage … but the fact that he insulted my religion, whether it was under the influence or not; we cannot have a mayor like that,” Mr. Goldkind said during Sunday’s debate at the Anne and Max Tanenbaum Community Hebrew Academy.
Mr. Silverstein, who served as Rob Ford’s spokesman during the mayor’s short-lived campaign for re-election, noted that the recording cited in the Star report was taken before the embattled mayor completed a stint in rehab.
“I was sitting in the front row [on Sunday]. And I say this as a Jew myself, it really felt like such an incredibly low blow.”

We can now test the pawpaws, car diesel, etc. like the President did in Tanzania!
Would be curious and would be seriously not surprised if these test kits all turned out with positive results if "non-human" subjects were swabbed!
