kubrick made certain promises so that nasa would let him use some of their crazy lenses for his films. he collaborated with them in creating a space odyssey (before the moon landing). if i had to guess… he worked with them on the moon landing stuff only minimally, and was probably led to believe that it wasn't going to be passed off as real. afterwards he was threatened and so he took a really long time to make the shining, and in it he said things symbolically, that he couldn't say in public.
