White deer tours set to begin for new owners at former Seneca Army Depot
(WHAM) - The new owners of Deer Haven Park, the site near Seneca Lake where white deer roam, are getting set to open the park to drive-thru auto tours.
On Saturday, June 27, the Majesty & Mystery Automobile Tour will open the gates to the grounds of the former Seneca Army Depot. Visitors will be able to drive along a pre-set route on eight miles of military and local roads.
All visitors will be required to remain in their vehicles at all times during the 60-90 minute tour.
Truman Bells, who runs Deer Haven Park in Romulus, said they had originally planned to hold bus tours. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, that plan is being put on hold.
Tours will be held every Saturday through Columbus Day weekend from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. at the park, which is about two miles north of Sampson State Park on Route 96A.
Both white deer and bald eagles make their homes on the property. Nearly 16,000 visitors have come to see the white deer over the last two years. The previous organization that oversaw the property closed down tours in December 2019 due to a lack of financial viability.
The cost of the tour is $25 per vehicles. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the usual additional fee of $5 per person in the vehicle is being waived.
Since the tour is self-guided, there is a Deer Haven Park Auto Tour app available to be downloaded at no cost.
