Samhain is a pagan religious festival originating from an ancient Celtic spiritual tradition. In modern times, Samhain (a Gaelic word pronounced “sow-win”) is usually celebrated from October 31 to November 1 to welcome in the harvest and usher in “the dark half of the year.”
The souls of the dead were supposed to revisit their homes on this day and the autumnal festival acquired sinister significance. It was the time to placate the supernatural powers controlling the processes of nature. In addition, Halloween was thought to be the most favorable time for divination, when barriers between the physical world and the spirit world break down, allowing more interaction between humans and inhabitants of the Otherworld.
