==What is COVID-19? Seven Key Points for Understanding SARS-CoV-2 and Testing

Introduction

COVID-19 appeared in Europe and the Americas in 2020, following the emergence of a new virus from China in 2019.

This new virus belongs to the well-known family of coronaviruses that has already produced two particularly severe epidemics in 2003 and 2012.

This new virus is called SARS-CoV-2, the third coronavirus responsible for a severe respiratory distress syndrome.

The severity of this syndrome is mainly characterized by hypoxemia, a lack of oxygen in the blood.

We have found that this severe lung involvement is seen in a relatively small number of patients infected with SARS-CoV-2, most of whom are asymptomatic or have only an influenza-like illness or even a common cold.

For the most severely affected patients, mainly elderly people and/or people weakened by one or more chronic diseases (heart, respiratory and kidney failure, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, etc.), mortality would be slightly higher than for seasonal influenza, the precise figures still need to be evaluated.

These figures are still controversial today, with some scientists and physicians arguing, with supporting evidence, that mortality has been overestimated by official health centers.

I felt it was important to clarify several points in relation to this coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, with COVID-19 disease, with its clinical and radiological diagnosis, and especially with the RT-PCR technique used as the main screening tool.

I conclude with a few words on the mode of transmission of the virus, by aerosols and airborne particles, implying in particular the importance of properly ventilating confined spaces.

1. Virus Size

1 millimeter (mm) = 1000 micrometers or microns (μm) = 1,000,000 nanometers (nm)

Diameter of a human hair: 150 micrometers (μm)

Size of SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus: 0.125 μm (125 nm), 1/1200th of hair

Influenza virus (Influenzavirus) size: 0.08-0.120 μm (80-120 nm)

Deoxyribonucleic acid or DNA is a biological macromolecule present in all cells as well as in many viruses. DNA contains all the genetic information, called the genome, that allows the development, functioning and reproduction of living beings.

The genome is made up of genes composed of DNA or RNA.

Let’s symbolize the DNA double helix by a ladder :

DNA is formed of two strands RNA is formed of paired pairs of one of the two strands.

All cells contain DNA or RNA, even viruses that are not cells but particles, genetic material (DNA or RNA) surrounded by a capsule or nucleocapsid.

Such particles cannot be said to be “alive”, they are packets of information gathered on a gene carrier (genes forming a genome).

Sanders to ‘The Squad’: Electing Biden & Harris Is Just the Beginning

US Sen. Bernie Sanders (S-VT), joined members of “The Squad” in a conference call to reiterate his cooperation with the far-Left gaggle, and to assure them he intends to join them in pushing a Biden administration as far to the Left of the political spectrum as possible.

The far-Left members of “The Squad” – US Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), Ilhan Omar (D-MN), and Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) – joined Sanders in a virtual roundtable discussion last Friday. Through it all one common theme was present. Electing Joe Biden (D) would only be the “beginning” of their plans to push their radical agenda.

Sanders stated that his preferred goal was to ultimately make Biden the “most Progressive president since FDR.”

“But we understand that electing Biden is not the end-all. It is the beginning,” the Socialist Senator from Vermont said. “Do they [Biden’s plans] go as far as we would want? No, they don’t,” Sanders said.

“Biden, unlike Trump,” Sanders said to the agreement of the other panelists, “does not conceive of himself as a dictator…We’re not giving up on our agenda.”

Taking on the subject of the New Green Deal, Sanders made it clear that he agreed with the Squad members in that the total package must be embraced in a potential Biden administration. “We’re not retreating,” Sanders insisted. He also doubled-down on his commitment to support them in their radical agendas for criminal justice and immigration.

Sanders said, however, the first priority is to “defeat the worst president in the modern history of this country.”

Early on in his campaign for the presidency, Biden signaled he had no issue with embracing far-Left radicals in his cabinet. His selection of Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA), the most liberal member of the Senate according to GovTracks, bears this out.

Hunter Biden’s ‘Fixer’ Identified – A Secret Service Head In a Major US City

For 47 years former Vice President Joe Biden was in politics. He is now the Democrat Candidate for President. However, recently unearthed activities involving Biden and his son Hunter have placed the whole family in a very embarrassing situation.

But it turns out that just like in the case of Carlos the Jackal, Hunter’s magic ability to walk through walls can be attributed to an all powerful fixer and enabler service. At the very least Hunter Biden put the Secret Service in precarious situations. But Hunter’s actions were so over the top that the efforts to cover for Hunter were likely over the top as well.

It turns out someone at the Secret Service was covering up for Hunter’s corrupt, illegal and perverted acts. We now know who that is.

Irish Deputy PM Varadkar Faces Grilling over Leak of Doctors' Pay Agreement to Rivals

MPs for both the Fianna Fail party, which is in a coalition with deputy PM Leo Varadkar's Fine Gael, and the opposition Sinn Fein condemned his statement that leaking confidential details of pay talks with a medical association to its rival was merely "not best practice".

Ireland's deputy prime minister will face harsh questions in the country's parliament over revelations he leaked details of a pay agreement with doctors to a rival union.

Taoiseach (prime minister) Micheál Martin said it was “inappropriate” for Tánaiste Leo Varadkar to disclose a draft agreement between the Department of Health and the Irish Medical Organisation (IMO) to its rival, the National Association of General Practitioners (NAGP), in April last year when he was PM.

The furore over Varadkar's leak is the latest scandal to strain the four-month-old governing coalition in the Republic of Ireland between Martin's Fianna Fail (FF), Varadkar's Fine Gael (FG) and the Greens.

"The Taoiseach is of the view that the action was not best practice, as sending a document of this kind in such a manner was inappropriate," a senior FF source told the Irish Independent on Sunday.

The two leaders have reportedly agreed that Varadkar will answer questions in the Dail (lower house of parliament) next week.

In a statement, Varadkar admitted leaking the pay deal that had yet to be signed, but claimed a report of his behaviour in the Village Magazine was "grossly defamatory."

The Tánaiste would only concede that it was "not best practice" to pass on the details through an "informal communication channel" to his friend, NAGP president Dr Maitiú Ó Tuathail, in a bid to persuade his association to agree to the same terms.

Opposition Sinn Fein Dail member (TD) for Waterford David Cullinane accused Varadkar of "hiding behind lame excuses."

"People have to have faith that the Tánaiste can act in good faith when he's acting on behalf of the state, and this does strike to the very heart of his credibility," he said.

"The facts for me here are clear that Leo, as the leader of Fine Gael and Taoiseach at the time, passed on a document to a friend about sensitive negotiations involving hundreds of millions of euro of taxpayers’ money," Cullinane added. "It was clearly a document that was marked confidential."

Sinn Fein, which favours reunification between the Republic and Northern Ireland, was excluded from the coalition government despite winning the most votes in February's general election and tying FF in the Dail with 37 TDs each.

Westpac blames virus and money-laundering fine on ‘disappointing’ financial results

Westpac has blamed the economic downturn from COVID-19 and a money-laundering scandal for its “disappointing” financial results.

Westpac’s yearly profits have been slashed by more than half as financial inflictions from the coronavirus pandemic and a money-laundering scandal hit the major bank’s bottom line.

The country’s second largest banking group posted a net profit of $2.29 billion for its 2020 financial reporting period, a 66 per cent plunge on the previous year.

Its cash earnings for the period dropped 62 per cent to $2.61 billion.

Westpac chief executive Peter King said the bank’s results were “disappointing”, noting high costs during an economic decline has weighed on its performance.

“2020 has been a particularly challenging year and our financial result is disappointing,” Mr King said.

“Our earnings have been significantly impacted by higher impairment charges, increased notable items and the sharp decline in economic activity. At the same time, we have incurred higher expenses due to increased resourcing to handle unprecedented COVID-19 demands and fixing our compliance issues.”

Westpac is anticipating its financial performance will improve throughout 2021 and 2022.

“We remain in an uncertain economic environment; however, the recent budget has provided significant stimulus to businesses and households,” Mr King said.

“Our economists expect at least half the personal tax cuts will be spent and businesses will respond to the generous depreciation allowances.”

The claim: Image shows Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden golfing with the CEO of Burisma

A viral image posted to Facebook claims to show Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden with the CEO of Burisma, Ukraine’s largest gas company. The post also claims that Joe Biden denied every meeting with the energy company head.

The claim follows the former vice president's 60 Minutes interview and a story from The New York Post on alleged contents of a hard drive purporting to show the Ukrainian and Chinese business activities of Hunter Biden.

"So…On 60 Minutes, Joe said he never met with Hunter and the Burisma CEO. Well, here he is with both…"reads an Oct. 28 Facebook post that has been shared over 900 times.

USA TODAY reached out to the user for comment.

The image showing the Bidens golfing with two others in the Hamptons first appeared last September on "Tucker Carlson Tonight."

The claim likely originated shortly after when President Donald Trump tweeted in October 2019 that the image showed the Bidens playing golf with the "company boss."

Who is in the photo?

No person pictured in the photo is a current or former CEO of Burisma and the photo dates back to 2014, when Joe Biden was vice president, Fox News reported.

The man on the very left of the image is Devon Archer, a former longtime business partner of Hunter Biden and the man to the right of Archer is Ralph Pascucci, founder of New York investment banking firm Netrex Capital Markets LLC.

Headshots of Pasucci and Archer reveal they are the people in the photograph next to the Bidens.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Hunter Biden and Archer both joined Burisma's board of directors in early 2014.

Australia's COVID-19 vaccine rollout plan revealed: Elderly, health workers to be treated first

Australia's Health Minister Greg Hunt has said that when a COVID-19 vaccine becomes available the elderly, health care professionals and aged care workers will be first in line to receive it.

Addressing the media this morning, Mr Hunt said over time every single person who wishes to be vaccinated will be.

"What we want to do is to give every Australian who seeks to be vaccinated, that capacity of the course of the coming twelve months," Mr Hunt said.
