"One thing is certain, before Prohibition was repealed, a lot of people made a lot of money. They made, smuggled and supplied alcohol to the Americans who disregarded the law and rejected the attitude of self-sacrifice that was the bedrock of the movement. Some of those people lived in Wayne County.
Under the cover of darkness, ships from Canada, carrying ale that would be sold in the United States, docked in Pultneyville and at points east of Sodus Point. There the illegal “hooch” was loaded for shipment and the deliveries began.
Cornelius J. “Red” Dwyer was a known bootlegger in the days before he became the owner of Belhurst Castle. Dwyer had contacts in Canada and arranged for shipments of whiskey to be smuggled in to Wayne County. Since Sodus Point was guarded closely by authorities, the illegal beverage would be brought in by speedboats that would dock east of Chimney Bluffs.
The fast boats could outrun the Coast Guard, but many boats were lost during bad weather. The boats were built for speed, not for easy maneuvering on rough waters. When the boats couldn’t get in to shore, they would have to be anchored out in the lake. Bottles would then be placed in burlap bags, dropped in the water and men would swim or wade out to retrieve the sacks.
