The Gift That Keeps On Giving: 'Can I Change My Vote' Still Spiking Since Hunter Laptop

More than 92 million Americans have now cast their ballots before Election Day – though some might be questioning if they can change that choice, according to Google Trends.

Google searches of the phrase "can I change my vote" topped Tuesday morning in the U.S. around 6 a.m. ET.

One of the subregions where the sentence started trending at one point was in Delaware, the state Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden represented in the Senate for 36 years.

Other subregions involved battleground states such as Maine, Pennsylvania, Florida, Ohio, Michigan, North Carolina, Iowa, Wisconsin and Arizona, according to Trend data at many points throughout Tuesday morning.

While a lot of states do not permit voters to change their early

votes, there are actually some that do, with restrictions.

For example, in New York, if you have submitted an absentee ballot but change your mind, you can actually go to your polling place throughout early voting or on Election Day and cast a new vote, in which case the absentee ballot is set aside and not counted, according to the state Board of Elections.

In Michigan, citizens sent in a ballot could submit a written and signed request to their voting clerk by 5 p.m. Oct. 30 asking to have the ballot canceled, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Minnesotans who sent in an absentee ballot through mail had until Oct. 20 to ask for a new ballot from their county or city election office.

In New Hampshire, voters who submitted an absentee ballot can go to the polls on Election Day throughout the first hour they're open and vote in person, or before their absentee ballot is counted.

In Wisconsin, if there is time, a voter could cancel their first absentee ballot and ask for a new one – but they had until Oct. 29, the legal deadline for requesting absentee ballots by mail.

As of Sunday, the 92 million Americans who have voted early in the 2020 presidential election are breaking a record this year. In 2016, 47.2 million early votes were cast in the presidential election, according to data from the U.S. Elections Project.

Pentagon announces random, rapid COVID-19 testing for Patriot Express flights

Service members flying overseas on official duty via Patriot Express flights from Baltimore/Washington International Airport and Seattle-Tacoma Airport may be subjected to random rapid, on-site COVID-19 testing, the Department of Defense announced Nov. 1.

Although all passengers flying on Patriot Express flights are screened for symptoms of COVID-19 and complete a pre-travel questionnaire and temperature check, now approximately 10-15 percent of passengers who don’t exhibit any symptoms will also be randomly tested for COVID-19 using a rapid, on-site laboratory test that can provide results within 15 minutes.

“By implementing rapid, on-site testing for Patriot Express passengers at our BWI and SEATAC terminals, Air Mobility Command is establishing a common baseline across the services to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19,” Brig. Gen. Norman West, Air Mobility Command Surgeon General, said in a news release. “Through our Total Force team, AMC is committed to doing everything in our power to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 among our Patriot Express passengers traveling to overseas locations.”

This policy, which took effect Sunday, excludes family members who may be traveling, those with a valid COVID-19 test that was taken within 72 hours of the flight, and Army personnel who have received an authorized medical clearance letter.

In the event a Patriot Express passenger tests positive, the individual will either be referred to a medical facility to receive appropriate treatment or will be placed in isolation — depending on how severe the illness symptoms are.

Those traveling independently will be subjected to a 10-day isolation period, while those with dependents will undergo a 14-day quarantine period. Individuals from Baltimore will receive attention from personnel at Dover Air Force Base while those from Seattle will receive similar assistance from personnel at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. The new testing policy coincides with an update from U.S. Forces Korea that 18 individuals affiliated with USFK who arrived in South Korea between Oct. 25 and Oct. 29 tested positive for COVID-19.

Of those, nine service members and one dependent had taken a government-chartered flight from the U.S., while four service members, three dependents and one contractor had taken international commercial flights.

All individuals were required to take a COVID-19 test prior to entering a mandatory quarantine period for at least 14 days, in accordance with USFK policy. Sixteen of the USFK-affiliated personnel tested positive ahead of entering quarantine and two others tested positive following a subsequent test required to exit quarantine.

Establishment media outlets have largely downplayed and dismissed new revelations about Hunter Biden’s foreign business dealings and how much his father, Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, may have known about those dealings.

Media outlets have offered a variety of rationales for downplaying the revelations, which have come from newly surfaced emails and from one of Hunter Biden’s former business partners, Tony Bobulinski.

An NBC News analysis asserted that the news outlet was unable to verify the authenticity of an email that show a Burisma executive thanking Hunter Biden for the opportunity to meet his father. The email, which was first reported by the New York Post, is unquestionably authentic, a cybersecurity expert told the Daily Caller News Foundation after conducting a forensic analysis of the email’s metadata.

The NBC News analysis also asserted that the email — and other newly surfaced Hunter Biden communications — didn’t contain any significant revelations. But the email was yet another piece of evidence suggesting that Joe Biden had spoken to Hunter Biden about his son’s business dealings, despite what the former vice president has said publicly.

National Public Radio (NPR) faced a backlash after publicly refusing to cover the new revelations, which were deemed “distractions.”

“We don’t want to waste our time on stories that are not really stories, and we don’t want to waste the listeners’ and readers’ time on stories that are just pure distractions,” NPR Managing Editor Terence Samuel said in a newsletter.

Other media outlets promoted uncorroborated claims that the emails were part of a “Russian disinformation” campaign.

Goldman Sachs 1MDB settlement: a meaningful punishment for major financial crimes?

While the deal bears hallmarks of prosecutorial timidity, the indictment against two banking executives makes the case unusual, experts say.

Late last month, the U.S. Department of Justice announced a landmark settlement with banking giant Goldman Sachs over its participation in a massive bribery scheme that syphoned hundreds of millions from Malaysian public coffers. As a part of a deal with prosecutors, the Wall Street firm agreed to pay nearly $3 billion to authorities in multiple countries, and agreed to have its Malaysian subsidiary plead guilty in a Brooklyn court to conspiring to violate U.S. bribery laws.

The fine, the largest ever under the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act followed the indictment of two Goldman executives who U.S. authorities alleged pushed the bribery ring.

The scandal focused on a multi-billion dollar fund known as 1MDB, which was ostensibly devoted to developing the Malaysian economy. Instead, billions were illicitly syphoned from the fund, often via offshore accounts, to wealthy elites, politicians and Goldman bankers. Some of the looted money is suspected to have financed the film production of “Wolf of Wall Street,” the Hollywood feature starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

In its action against Goldman, U.S. authorities used a controversial tool called a deferred prosecution agreement, or DPA, in which an offending firm pays a fine and agrees to a period of probation in order to avoid the potentially ruinous prospect of being criminally prosecuted.

Critics say that the U.S. legal system’s increasing reliance on DPAs to address financial crime reflects its softness on corporate executives, who can often safely assume that they will not face jail time for white-collar misconduct.

In September, ICIJ published the FinCEN Files, a global investigation detailing trillions of tainted dollars moving through major U.S. banks. In many cases, huge amounts of suspicious money flowed through institutions that had already been subjected to DPAs for money laundering. To some critics, the findings epitomized the toothlessness of DPAs and their inability to deter corporate crime. “They’ve become in effect the cost of doing business rather than a real punishment,” Jed Rakoff, a senior federal judge in Manhattan, told ICIJ.

New charges have been added in an ongoing investigation against a white supremacist gang, known as the 1488s, treating them as not just as hate group, but a criminal organization involved in drug and weapons trafficking, according to a statement the US Department of Justice released Wednesday.

“The 1488s are a violent, prison-based gang operating inside and outside of state prisons throughout Alaska and elsewhere,” said the DOJ. “As part of their operations, 1488s members and associates engaged in illegal activities under the protection of the enterprise, including narcotics trafficking, weapons trafficking, and other illegal activities to promote the influence of the gang.”

The investigation began after the 2017 kidnapping and murder of a man named Michael Stanton, also known as “Steak Knife.”

Stanton was picked up by five members of the gang, allegedly on the orders of the gang's leadership, including a man known as Filthy Fuhrer.

“In or about 2016, Fuhrer allegedly became more aggressive in his efforts to impose discipline within the gang, ” said the DOJ. “He allegedly believed that members who were defying the 1488 code of conduct were diminishing the power and influence of the gang.”

Stanton was kidnapped, beaten and murdered.

According to the Anti-Defamation League, the numbers 14 and 88 are common code used by white supremacists to identify themselves. The number 8 corresponds to H, the eighth letter in the English alphabet, and 88 represents the initials of the Nazi salute Heil Hitler. The number 14 stands for the 14 words of the White Supremacist slogan, “We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children."

“Together, the numbers form a general endorsement of white supremacy and its beliefs. As such, they are ubiquitous within the white supremacist movement - as graffiti, in graphics and tattoos,” said an ADL primer on the symbols.

Along with RICO conspiracy, Fuhrer and several of the other defendants were also charged with murder in aid of racketeering, kidnapping in aid of racketeering, assault in aid of racketeering, kidnapping, and conspiracy to commit assault and kidnapping in aid of racketeering.

China Lobbies for the West to Pay Africa’s Debts (to China)

Chinese state media on Thursday called on the Western world to help African nations pay their enormous debts, many of which just happen to be owed to Chinese banks thanks to China’s debt-trap Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

China’s state-run Global Times cited Zambia’s inability to make loan payments to the China Development Bank (CDB) as a warning bell for African financial collapse unless the Western world forgets about its own economic difficulties from the Chinese coronavirus, shakes off its “protectionism and populism,” and starts forgiving African debt.

The editorial chided American and European officials for worrying that if they pump more money into Africa, it will just end up in Chinese banks:

For Western countries, the pandemic has led to shrinking funds and capabilities for foreign aid. The impact of the pandemic this year has hit global trade and investment with unprecedented speed and scale, exposing the fragility of modern supply chains. Unemployment rates in developed countries are rising, and income inequality is also increasing. In response to the ever-increasing problems, politicians often do not confront the problem directly and seek solutions, but adopt a nationalist approach, divert public anger, cut foreign aid funds, and concentrate resources on domestic priorities at the expense of support for the less developed countries.

The most serious consequence of the rise of protectionism and populism in developed countries is its destruction to the existing multilateral system. Reflected in the field of international aid, mistrust among creditors has further increased.

While China is actively promoting the implementation of the G20 “debt relief initiative,” Western countries are beginning to worry that their debt forgiveness to African countries will be used to repay Chinese loans. Although this worry is absurd, it directly reflects how bleak the prospects for international coordination in the future are.

Zambia may yet become the first African nation to default on its debts. The Zambian government announced it would suspend payments to external commercial creditors on October 13, citing cash-flow problems exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic. A deal was struck this week to defer a final decision until November 13.

The reason Chinese state media is so agitated about the situation is that Zambia’s bondholders said they want to know more about the money Zambia owes to China before they decide how to proceed.

Patrick Curran, senior economist at the Tellimber consulting firm, told CNBC on Monday that Zambia’s huge budget deficit since 2015 was “driven mainly by a massive pipeline of Chinese-backed infrastructure projects,” exacerbated by the “excessively lax fiscal policy” of President Edgar Lungu.
