It could be his monitor that's crap, cos the mics have sounded good to me
The bottom of it looks like one of the new Shure Betas; doesn't have a whole lot of presence, but there is a wind filter over the ball. It's pretty windy, so that makes an acoustical nightmare, so I think the sound from the monitors was getting blown into the mic. If you can find the frequency that's feeding back, you can notch it out of the monitor EQs
