1865 - The Secret Service Division was formed on 7.5.1865 as a part of the Department of the Treasury.

1870 - Secret Service HQ was relocated to NYC. It returned to Wash DC 4 years later.

1882 - Congress officially acknowledged the SS as a distinct org within the Treasury Dept.

1894 - The SS began informal part-time protection of Pres. Grover Cleveland.

1901 - As a result of the assassination of President William.McKinley, Congress requested SS protection of U.S. Presidents.

1908 - The SS began providing protection for the President-elect.

1913 - Congress authorized permanent protection of the President and statutory authorization for Pres-elect protection.

1915 - Pres. Wilson directed the Sec. Treasury to have the SS investigate foreign espionage in the United States.

1917 - Congress authorized protection for the President's immediate family.

1933 - An assassination attempt was made on Pres-elect FDR in Miami, FL on 2.15.33.

1936 - SS "operatives" were now referred to as "agents".

1963 - President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, TX on 11.22.1963. Later, Congress passed legislation for the protection of Mrs. Kennedy and her minor children for 2 years. (Public Law 83-195)

1965 - Congress authorized the SS to protect a former Pres. and his wife during his lifetime.

Unless declined, protection for the widow and minor children of a former Pres. was extended to 4 years after the President leaves or dies in office (Public Law 89-186).

1981 - An assassination attempt was made on President Ronald Reagan in DC on 3.30.1981.
