‘Explosive situation could lead to constitutional crisis’: Politicians across the globe react to US election

Officials overseas have been monitoring the US presidential election, with some expressing support for one of the candidates, while others warned of a full-blown political crisis.

German Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer noted that “the battle for the legitimacy of the result” has begun. “It is a very explosive situation,” she told public broadcaster ZDF, adding that the events in the US “can lead to a constitution crisis.”

On election night, Trump claimed that there were widespread attempts to “disenfranchise” his supporters and threatened to appeal to the Supreme Court to halt “all voting.” German Vice Chancellor Olaf Scholz said the vote count should continue so that the democratic procedures are carried out “in full.”

The Chair of the Bundestag Foreign Affairs Committee, Norbert Roettgen, wrote on social media that Berlin is “not set to work with Trump for four more years,” and his re-election would “fundamentally challenge us in a way for which we are not yet prepared.” He also said that while “many had expected a clear victory for Biden… this scenario is now off the table.”

In a similar vein, London Mayor Sadiq Khan wished Biden good luck. “We’re rooting for you,” he tweeted, adding that “we’ve seen people come together across the globe to fight for a better future.”

“We can’t win that fight without America,” he wrote.

With two key swing-state races yet to be called, Democrats' hopes for a 'blue wave' in the Senate crashed on Tuesday as it quickly became clear that they wouldn't manage to flip enough seats to challenge the Republican majority. Even more alarming, the GOP appears to have picked up 10 seats in the House, eroding the Democrats' majority.

Now that Maine's 4 electoral votes have been counted for Joe Biden, eight states, including the key swing states of Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania have yet to be decided. Trump blames ‘surprise’ ballot dumps & says his lead 'magically disappearing' as he trails Biden in key states

As Americans await final results to a knife-edge presidential election, President Donald Trump has suggested fraud could be at play in states where he claims to have been leading only to have Joe Biden close the gap.

“Last night I was leading, often solidly, in many key States, in almost all instances Democrat run & controlled,” Trump tweeted on Wednesday.

“Then, one by one, they started to magically disappear as surprise ballot dumps were counted,” he continued, adding that “pollsters” got this election “completely & historically wrong.”

The message was flagged and labeled possibly "misleading" by Twitter.

The president did not specify what specific states he was referring to, but important swing states like Wisconsin and Michigan remain at play, with Biden ahead in both, according to reporting from The Associated Press. All three states have governors from the Democrat Party.

Trump followed up his tweet with another questioning “mail-in ballot dumps.”

The president has been critical of mail-in voting and has blasted states like Pennsylvania for accepting ballots sent by mail days after polls close. Those ballots, however, are still required to be sent out by a certain date and cannot be filled out past polls closing.

Several of the states still up for grabs - like Nevada and Georgia - stopped counting on Tuesday evening and resumed the following morning due to thousands of absentee ballots waiting.
