With Ant Crackdown, Beijing Puts China's Richest Man Squarely In Its Sights

For years, entrepreneur Jack Ma's spectacular rise to multi-billion wealth and global fame was cited as a sterling example of how China's transformation to a capitalist society (with Chinese characteristics) could actually work: after all, if a simple teacher could launch the Alibaba empire and accumulate $64 billion in wealth, making him China's richest man (and #17 in Forbes global listing of billionaires) anyone could do it. All that was torpedoed over the past 48 hours when the snarling communist tiger hiding just behind the scenes, emerged demonstrating vividly that in China, winners and losers come and go with a simple thumbs up - or down - by the Politburo.

Because with the shocking and unprecedented pulling of the Ant Financial IPO, which was supposed to break for trading on Thursday in what would have been the world's biggest Initial Public Offering, Beijing made it clear that it would no longer tolerate the criticism of the notoriously outspoken Ma. And to make sure his life is miserable from this point on, the suspension of his IPO is just the beginning of a renewed campaign by China to rein in the fintech empire controlled by Jack Ma.

According to Bloomberg, just one day after the world was rocked by the sudden pulling of the dual-listed public offering, Chinese authorities are now setting their sights on Ant’s biggest source of revenue: its credit platforms that funnel loans from banks and other financial institutions to millions of consumers across China, according to people familiar with the matter.

In a direct attempt to cripple Ant's business model, and ultimately dismantle China's fintech quasi-monopoly, the China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission plans to discourage lenders from using Ant’s platforms and has already asked some to ensure their portfolios are compliant with stringent draft regulations announced on Monday, said Bloomberg sources.

The proposed measures, which in theory could be ascribed to a broader deleveraging campaign which recently hammered such massively indebted property developers as China Evergrande (discussed in "China Crackdown On Property Developer Debt Sparks Fears About Systemic Crisis"), call for platform operators to provide at least 30% of the funding for loans, which would render many of Ant’s existing transactions non-compliant and force the company to raise much more capital. The company currently keeps about 2% of loans on its own balance sheet, with the rest funded by third parties or packaged as securities and sold on.

"From the perspective of regulators and investors, they all need Ant to provide a better disclosure on the co-lending business,” Chen Shujin, head of China financial research at Jefferies told Bloomberg. “Ant needs to be aligned with regulations going forward and show that its business model can help lower borrowing costs for the economy rather than raising them with some kind of monopoly.”

But what prompted Beijing's ire? After all, the IPO was set to be a smashing success as early as Monday when Ant shares were trading as much as 50% higher in the gray market?

As we reported yesterday, Beijing erupted after Ma blasted the nation’s financial system and questioned global regulatory models at a high-profile conference last month, calling banks "pawn shops" saying that China is still a “youth” and needs more innovation to build an ecosystem for the healthy development of the local industry.

FBI Looking Into Reports of US Voter Suppression Calls Made in Australia

While Americans were heading to the polls and voting by mail over the past few weeks, dozens of Australians were reportedly receiving robocalls Down Under that encouraged them to stay home and not cast their so-called ballots in the US presidential election.

"I've had four or five of these calls, which I initially assumed was something to do with a COVID-19 message," Perth resident Ben told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. "Coming up as a local mobile number, I wasn't expecting something linked to the US election. I just blocked the number and moved on."

The call reportedly told unsuspecting Australians that they should stay home on November 3, rather than head to the polls to cast their votes for either US President Donald Trump or former Vice President Joe Biden.

The issue is now being looked into, according to a Department of Homeland Security official who spoke with ABC.

According to RoboKiller, an app that boasts a “global database of 1.4 Billion analyzed calls” to fight against telemarketers and robocalls, the call in question has been issued millions of times within the past year.

"There's a little bit of confusion about this one across the industry [but] this robocall is being sent at a very high volume," Giulia Porter, vice president of RoboKiller, noted.

She also revealed that by Tuesday, the robocall had risen to fifth place on the company’s list of top spam calls.

David, from Brisbane, was particularly perplexed after receiving a similar robocall from an unrecognizable Australian number.

"The US elections have got nothing to do with me," he said in reference to the call, which went straight to voicemail. "I can't see why they're targeting Australians who have nothing to do with the US voting system."

News of these robocalls in Australia comes amid a flurry of similar reports in the US state of Michigan, which prompted the opening of a probe by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

“Getting reports of multiple robocalls going to Flint residents that, due to long lines, they should vote tomorrow,” tweeted Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel on Tuesday. “Obviously this is FALSE and an effort to suppress the vote. No long lines and today is the last day to vote. Don’t believe the lies! Have your voice heard! RT PLS.”

Also, GOP fraudsters Jack Burkman, 54, and Jacob Wohl, 22, were arraigned in early October on charges of voter intimidation, conspiracy to commit an election law violation and using a computer to commit the crime of conspiracy and election law. They allegedly sent out a robocall seeking to dissuade voters from casting their ballots.

Twitter Goes Into Full Censorship Mode, Hides Half of Trump’s Post-Election Day Tweets

The soft censorship began Wednesday morning, when the president took to his favourite social media platform to express his frustration over alleged discrepancies which saw his early lead in key battleground states evaporate in favour of his Democratic rival Joe Biden.

Twitter has censored four of the eight tweets published by President Donald Trump in the past 12 hours, putting up a disclaimer reading “Some or all of the content shared in this Tweet is disputed and might be misleading about an election or other civic process” next to the content the company found objectionable.

Users wishing to read the president's tweets need to click “View” to access the tweets.

Each of the contested tweets relates to Tuesday’s election results. In addition to hiding the content, Twitter also flagged the president's tweets with a "Learn about US 2020 election security efforts" link outlining the company's standards against what it classifies as false or misleading content.

The first tweet, published by Trump shortly after midnight early Wednesday morning, accuses his Democratic rivals of “trying to STEAL the Election.”

In the second, published about nine hours later, Trump complains about his early election lead “magically” disappearing over the past 12 hours, “in almost all instances [in] Democrat run and controlled” states. Trump calls the situation “VERY STRANGE.”

Trump’s next tweet about mail-in ballot dumps was curiously left unscathed. But the one after that, a retweet of a tweet by US comedian Matt Walsh, was again covered up by the social media giant. In the tweet, Walsh linked to a third tweet which has since been deleted said to feature information about an election results update in Michigan that had apparently given Biden “100% of new votes.”

Some Pennsylvania Counties Have Zero Precincts Reporting & Donald Trump Won Them All In 2016

Update: the information presented herein is reflective of what appeared in Pennsylvania’s statewide dataset at the time it was written. Multiple county election sites have released updated totals that are not reflected in the original text. Armstrong County has reported 24,945 (82 percent) for Donald Trump; Bedford has reported 22,529 (83 percent) for Trump; Crawford reported 24,180 (79 percent) for Trump.

According to Open Data Pennsylvania, the state currently has 10 counties — Armstrong, Bedford, Clarion, Crawford, Erie, Fayette, Fulton, Pike, Warren and York — with zero precincts reporting results from the 2020 presidential election. Within these counties lie 661 precincts and 842,217 registered voters, according to state records. Incumbent President Donald Trump won all 10 of these counties in the 2016 presidential election by at least a plurality of 48 percent of the vote and enjoyed margins of victory as high as 84 percent, according to election returns from the Pennsylvania Department of State.

As seen in the below graphic, Trump defeated Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton by 74 percent in Armstrong County; if he holds that margin among the county’s 44,820 registered voters, he’s looking at a potential 33,166 votes to bolster his current lead in Pennsylvania over opponent Joe Biden, who hails from Scranton, Pennsylvania, seated in Lackawanna County.

Whatever The Election Outcome, We Can Revolt Against Politicians, The Media, & Their String-Pullers By Uniting

We’re living in a nation divided. You need only look at social media or the comments section of nearly any website to see the rage and animosity between people who hold opposing opinions. Violence has broken out in the streets of many of our cities and it’s all the media really wants to talk about.

Some people will call me naive, but I still believe in unity, the goodness of people, and the possibility of peace.

Even on the cusp of an election that many are saying is “the most important” of our lifetime, an election that many have vowed violence and destruction over the results, an election that has drawn battle lines right through our own neighborhoods, I believe that it doesn’t need to be this way.

I’m writing this piece before the election. I have no idea how it’s going to turn out. This is my opinion regardless of which candidate is declared the winner and it is not based on politics. It’s based on my belief that Americans can still unite if we choose to do so.

People are giving politicians control over their relationships.

What I don’t understand is how people can allow politicians – people who are in it for power, not for you and me – to divide them from the people they once loved. How can you look at your son, daughter, parent, cousin, or friend and say, “You voted for X and therefore I no longer love you?” How can you put this politician and what he or she stands for ahead of your own people?

Do you think those politicians care about you enough to divide their own families? To disinvite someone to Christmas dinner? To “unfriend” somebody on social media and in real life? Of course not. All they want is your vote. They want your verbal support. They don’t give a tinker’s damn whether or not your family is destroyed because of them and their causes.

And yet, I see it all the time. I saw a woman proudly declaring she got her dying father to go vote against a candidate as if that was the most important way to spend her last few days with a loved one. It made me sick. When my father was dying, all I wanted was to hear his voice, hold his hand, listen to his stories, and tell him my own. He told me a dozen times on his last day, “You know I love you, right?”And I replied, “Yes, I know because you showed me every single day. I love you too.” Politics was the last thing on my mind. It would be the last thing on any rational human being’s mind at a time like that.

This is not a unique case, either. Families are fractured forever for people who don’t even know who they are, and people feel good about it.
