It very much depends on your budget, and whether you want to carry or keep it in your house.
For carry a subcompact 9mm Glock or similar is good.
For home use, the range is much wider, but as some have noted it is a good idea to try out various styles at the range.
My recommendation is decide if you like the Glock style or the 1911 style (of using safeties etc).
TBH - you can hardly go wrong with a Glock 9mm
My preference is for Sig Sauer, but that is because i prefer that style of operation
