Here is a partial explanation.
In montana the farmers I know will talk like
republicans, but when the rubber hits the road, they vote for the Democrat president. Why? because the local races don't effect their subsidy payments. That comes from the USDA Federal. They like
Republicans in the state offices because they will keep the local taxes down.
Most (large) farmers are just another welfare drain.
