I was a medium sized miner (8kw) around the time where GPUs were useful.
It is extremely easy to spin up an ALT COIN based off existing coins. Also a lot of hardware already out there and GPU allow for more options over a asic. So the base platform would not take to long to setup. I am sure they would be running there own code and even possibly algorithms. I read that awhile back and it mostly just covers process and the interface. Which is where most the work would be at. It is possible they have some sort of testnet already.
