It's a lot more important than you think, and certainly NOT a distraction. "Entertainment" in the form of movies, music, books, and so on are all used to provide people with their picture of the world. A person's favorite music, movies, books - mere entertainment - are like a group of close friends, capable of persuading people of almost any behavior. "Entertainment" is a primary source of information about how the world works.
Anything capable of representing the human archetypes forms the bedrock of collective social knowledge. Archetypes are the key to the human soul, and through that, the organization of its contents. Anything people give their attention to, they are allowing to form them. The need for archetypal representation limits what most people will find interesting, but it also creates context for other things - for example, fictional stories used to create a widespread anticipation of and willingness to embrace new technologies.
This is why it is so important to Them that virtually everyone associated with the entertainment industry is controlled one way or another. If anyone were allowed to gain a large audience, they could influence the collective. Instead, the wider sphere of media is coordinated to direct the narrative in directions favorable to the interests of the elite.
