El Paso hospitals to get Department of Defense resources in fighting coronavirus surge

 

El Paso will get some help from the U.S. Department of Defense in its COVID-19 surge.

 

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced Friday the Department of Defense has deployed three U.S. Air Force Medical Specialty Teams to provide medical help to three El Paso city hospitals.

The teams will include 20 military medical providers to assist University Medical Center of El Paso, Hospitals of Providence Transmountain Campus and Las Palmas Del Sol Medical Center.

 

"Our ongoing partnership with the federal government is crucial to our efforts in reducing COVID-19 hospitalizations in El Paso," Abbott said in a news release. "I thank the Department of Defense for providing these resources to the El Paso community and for working alongside the Lone Star State to mitigate this virus."

 

El Paso has seen more than 1,000 daily coronavirus cases in recent weeks. On Friday, health officials announced 18 new deaths and 1,300 new coronavirus cases. The death toll now is 657 and there have been 59,852 total cases. There are 23,702 active cases.

 

There are currently 1,049 hospitalized in El Paso for COVID-19 and 311 in intensive care.
