If I remember correctly, Q, in White Squall the crew had a captain present during the Storm.
We need orders sir.
My lesson from the storm scene was that the captain gave a clear order to turn the ship a specific direction. That order was ignored causing the ship to sink. Is there a real life metaphor we are supposed to be experiencing as representation of this scene?
How do we know which way to steer, and are we intended to make the mistake of the film, or listen to the cap and save the ship? How can we know. All we can do is wait.
