Only since the 70's and recently have more researchers and docs been taught about it and been able to find those with these traits. 'They' are actively seeking them out for their potential under the guise of research and hinderance.

it's debatable - because if you haven't coined a term in which to describe a phenomena,it can't be 'diagnosed' or recognised. So even our grandparents and beyond had their 'quirks' and method to their madness, which would now be coined as autism spectrum disorder. Only, it might not be a disorder at all, but merely natural desire/need for balance in order to be at one with Earths energies.
