Trump chief of staff Mark Meadows tests positive for COVID-19: report

White House chief of staff Mark Meadows has tested positive for COVID-19, according to a new report Friday.

Meadows, 61, informed a close circle of advisers after Election Day, Bloomberg News reported.

His diagnosis with the dangerous bug follows that of his boss, President Trump, who was hospitalized with COVID-19 last month, and comes in the middle of a fiercely contested presidential election with Joe Biden poised to capture the White House.

Trump campaign aide Nick Trainer and at least two other White House aides currently have the coronavirus, sources told Bloomberg.

The ongoing White House outbreak comes as the country tallied at least 121,289 new cases on Friday — breaking the national record for new cases for the third time in as many days.

It’s unclear when Meadows was diagnosed.

But it’s understood he has been at the White House in recent days, advising the president on how to handle his disappointing finishes in must-win states, and was in the East Room in the early hours of Wednesday morning when Trump falsely declared himself the victor.

The former North Carolina congressman’s diagnosis means that he and anyone who came into contact with him will have to enter quarantine just as the president prepares to mount a massive legal battle to contest the vote count in states where Biden is narrowly ahead.

Meadows’ diagnosis is the latest case in the West Wing, which has seen dozens of coronavirus infections, including the president, the first lady, their son Barron, press secretary Kayleigh McEnany, senior counselor Hope Hicks and Trump campaign manager Bill Stepien.

Despite the risk to his own health, Meadows was a shadow at Trump’s side as the president battled the disease, riding with him on Marine One to Walter Reed Military Medical Hospital and sleeping not far from the president’s hospital bed.

The ex-lawmaker was one of the many Trump administration officials who had shunned wearing a mask on the White House grounds, even when talking with reporters.

Meadows is the president’s third chief of staff after taking the role in March amid the worsening pandemic.

His performance has been chequered by gaffes which have angered the commander-in-chief, including telling reporters that the president’s vitals were “very concerning” during his coronavirus battle — countering the upbeat message of Trump’s doctors.

2 armed members of Vets for Trump group arrested near Philadelphia vote counting location

Two men with loaded handguns were arrested Thursday near the Philadelphia convention center where an ongoing vote count could decide the presidential election, police said.

Joshua Macias, 42, and Antonio LaMotta, 61, traveled from the Virginia Beach, Virginia, area in a Hummer and did not have permits to carry the weapons in Pennsylvania, police said. They were charged with illegal firearms possession, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch newspaper.

Macias had a .40-caliber Beretta handgun inside his jacket, LaMotta had a 9 mm Beretta in a holster and an AR-style rifle and ammunition were found inside the vehicle, Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said. Authorities initially said that the rifle did not have a serial number but later said that it did.

A woman with the men was not arrested, Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner said, also noting that other charges could come for the two men.

The men were arrested after the FBI in Virginia relayed a tip to Philadelphia police. Officers stopped the men about a block from the vehicle, Outlaw said.

A silver Hummer with Virginia license plates was parked Friday at the location where police say they found the men’s vehicle. It was adorned with an American flag, a window sticker for the right-wing conspiracy theory QAnon and a fresh parking ticket.

LaMotta and Macias both have frequented Virginia right-wing rallies and are President Donald Trump supporters, the Times-Dispatch reported. Macias was a Vets for Trump co-founder, the group’s executive director, Vlad Lemets, told the newspaper. LaMotta is listed as an ambassador on the organization’s website. He also is an Army vet and is a bodyguard and security contractor, according to a website under his name, the newspaper reported.

Macias and LaMotta, both of Chesapeake, Virginia, remained in police custody on Friday and were awaiting arraignment on state weapons charges: carrying a concealed firearm without a license and carrying a firearm on a public street.

Information on lawyers who could speak on their behalf wasn’t immediately available.

Chinese Propagandists Bolster Biden

'Beijing is For-Biden City'

A Chinese propagandist signaled on Twitter that he welcomed the prospect of a Biden White House in the days after the U.S. presidential election.

Hu Xijin, the editor in chief of the Global Times, shared a forum post from a "smart netizen" who said that Beijing is a "For-Biden City" that will welcome Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden's electoral victory. He also noted in a separate tweet that Chinese netizens are drawn to Biden's story of overcoming personal and family tragedies.

"If Biden elected, i really sure relation between China and USA gonna be normalized. Because Beijing is For-Biden City," the forum post read.

Even as Hu praised Biden, Chinese propaganda organs have used the contentious election as an opportunity for hostile levity against its geopolitical rival since Tuesday. China Central Television (CCTV), the country's national broadcaster, brought on commentators to call the United States the "loser" of the election, while a state-owned outlet in Hong Kong wrote that "so-called US-style democracy has descended into a joke."

While most of these mocking stories were written in Mandarin for a domestic Chinese audience, Global Times, a nationalist tabloid known for inflammatory coverage even by China's standards, published an English-language piece that mocked President Donald Trump and said Chinese netizens are watching the election for "laughs" and "comicalness."

"The ongoing neck-and-neck US presidential election has … also become a high-impact topic among curious Chinese netizens," the Global Times article read. "However, instead of giving birth to division, violence and aguish [sic] as it has to many in the US; in China, the election has mainly served as entertainment; a sneak-peek into the US and its chaotic society."

The Chinese state outlet's reports on the U.S. election are in line with its usual behavior, which often highlights a democratic system's more chaotic and uncertain elements to delegitimize it. One CCTV story, the "Calm Before the Storm," said the election might lead to widespread riots, while a government-linked Twitter account disseminated videos of boarded-up buildings in the United States.

While official sources appear to be limiting their commentary until the outcome is officially settled, Hu's pro-Biden stance is in line with the country's leadership, according to an American intelligence analysis. Chinese propagandists published articles indicating preference for the former vice president in the months leading up to the election, considering him a more "predictable" candidate than Trump or Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.).

"Many Chinese analysts predict that … the proposed Democrat platform on foreign policy showed that if Biden wins, the US will remain tough on China," an August Global Times article read. "So Beijing should remain vigilant. But tactically, the US approach would be more predictable, and Biden is much smoother to deal with than Trump—a viewpoint that is shared by many countries."
