The Monroe County Police Department and Toledo Police have not received any calls regarding the noise, but are sending police to the area to investigate.

One commentator said: “Police say the noise came from a group of young people who had set off a cannon.”

A local resident, Mary Bellestri, commented on the blast, saying: “It sounded like natural gas explosion”.

Another social media user Donna Travers said: “I live near downtown Temperance and it sounded like it was in my back yard it sounded so close!”

Sarah Hayes said: “It sounded like a huge bomb”.

Griffin Kirsch added: “I live near Lewis and Temperance. I’ve been hearing gunshots and booms all day coming from that direction.”

Simone Canales said: “My husband and the neighbour think maybe it was a sonic boom…did see an aeroplane fly over immediately after.”

However Michelle Queen stated: “The aliens have arrived”
