but you add up the total of all the strokes that you took hitting the ball through 18 holes, each hole has a degree of difficulty that is ranked by an average number of strokes that it takes to hit the hole, which is called par. There are names for different scores above and below par, I don't know them off hand but like eagle and bogie or some shit like that , so perhaps 72 is an average score not sure on that just guessing
