I asked the missionary, whats the story on why they are importing rice when they could just be farming. Rice is not even native. He said it is from the Colonial days. The whites showed up, brought tractors and equipment, ran farms and a railroad, employed the locals and were very productive with the rich resources. But when the whites left, the infrastructure gradually degraded.
Port fell into disrepair, railroad got sold off for scrap iron by a warlord, no one to fix the tractors when they break. And apparently, they did not even have a native way of farming that anyone remembered. Supposedly it used to be done with Caribou / Water buffalo, but no one these days knows about that.
So the whole place is degraded into an apathetic shit hole. But it is a shit hole full of lovely, happy people, if you can believe it. They are strong believers in God, they sing and dance, they are like children in a way.
So I don't know if the white man coming was a blessing or a curse.
