It is ‘extraordinary’ that poll workers were sent home amid 'dubious' election result

Commentator Mark Steyn says America has the “least clean” elections in the Western world and that there are “real questions and real grievances” about what went on in this year’s presidential election.
Donald Trump is on track to be the 15th one-term president after Joe Biden won at least 290 electoral college votes.
President Trump has failed to concede the election, arguing there is widespread voter fraud.
Mr Steyn told Sky News host Chris Kenny it would shock people from countries around the world “what goes on in American elections” and said the latest election was "dubious".
“And in this case, a handful of hardcore Democrat sitters that have run corrupt elections in some cases since the end of the Civil War … have managed to decide the result of the election for the rest of the country”.
Mr Steyn said former boxing champion Joe Frazier apparently voted in Pennsylvania even though he has been dead for a number of years.
He said it was “extraordinary” what happened on election night as votes were counted in critical swing states.
“It’s extraordinary what happened on election night round about 10:47pm where suddenly the states that are closely contested all decide that the poll workers are going home for the night and they’ll resume at sometime in the morning.
“I’ve never seen that in any country where I’ve chanced to be spending an election.
“Basically, the result is decided by which boxes show up between 2am and 4am on the day after the election,” he said.

Voting equipment makers: Machines not 100% secure

(9 Jan 2020) The House Administration Committee on Thursday heard from the CEOs of the three biggest U.S. voting equipment manufacturers who all say voting machines are not 100 percent secure.
In the first election security hearing at the start of a presidential election year, top executives from Dominion Voting Systems, Hart InterCivic and Election Systems and Software (ES&S) testified before congress.
When asked by the ranking member of the committee Rep. Rodney Davis of Illinois if voting machines were 100% secure, the executives unanimously stated "no."
The executives represent companies believed to control more than 90% of the voting equipment market in the U.S., according to a report put out by the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton Public Policy Initiative.

States buy new voting systems running old software

(13 Jul 2019) According to an analysis by The Associated Press, states are buying 'new' election systems that will soon be running outdated and unsupported software that makes it more vulnerable to hacking.
AP found that the vast majority of the nation's 10,000 election jurisdictions, including those that have recently acquired new systems, will be managing their elections _ that is, creating ballots and programming voting machines, tallying votes and reporting counts _ on Windows 7 or an even older operating system.
That's significant because Windows 7 reaches its "end of life" date on Jan. 14, meaning Microsoft will no longer provide technical support and produce "patches" to fix known software vulnerabilities found in computer code that hackers can exploit to get into someone's computer system. Meanwhile, a simple update for election systems requires vendors to go through a lengthy and costly process.
AP surveyed all 50 states, the District of Columbia and the territories, and found multiple key battleground states like Pennsylvania are also impacted by the upcoming end date for Windows 7 support, including Wisconsin, Florida, Iowa, Indiana, Arizona and North Carolina. Also impacted is Michigan, which recently acquired a new system, and Georgia, which is set to announce its selection of a new system any day now.
The world of voting technology vendors is tiny and dominated by three titans: Omaha, Nebraska-based Election Systems and Software, LLC; Denver, Colorado-based Dominion Voting Systems, Inc., and Austin, Texas-based Hart InterCivic Inc.
Together they make up about 92 percent of the election systems used nationwide, and all three have increasingly focused their commercial efforts on winning over states newly flush with federal funds who want to update their systems given concerns about election hacking after U.S. intelligence agencies determined that Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election to help Donald Trump win.
Only Dominion's newest systems are running on a supported operating system, though it has other problems: Many of its legacy systems acquired from companies that no longer exist, run on Windows XP or possibly even older operating systems.
Hart's newest system being sold to states is run on a version of Windows that will no longer be supported on Oct. 13, weeks before the presidential election.
"What's really troubling is that we discovered that a lot of the equipment that's being sold on the market now to replace old outdated systems is built on operating systems that are also very soon to be outdated. So there's a lot of counties and states that are spending a lot of money for new systems and in a very short few months those new systems are gonna be on software that's end of life and no longer going to be receiving security updates against known threats," said Susan Greenhalgh, the policy director for the National Election Defense Coalition.
Microsoft usually pushes out such patches for their operating systems on a weekly basis, so hackers have learned to especially target older unsupported Microsoft operating systems.
The company has historically had more users worldwide on its operating systems, and their system has been ground zero for some of the world's most crippling cyberattacks including the WannaCry ransomware attack which froze systems in 200,000 computers across 150 countries in 2017.
For the average Microsoft user, the end of Microsoft support might mean you have to update to a newer operating system like Windows 10.
