The coronavirus pandemic in the U.S. will face its darkest period so far over the next three to four months as cases continue to surge above 100,000 per day, a newly-appointed coronavirus advisor to President-elect Joe Biden said on Monday.

“What America has to understand is that we are about to enter Covid hell,” Dr. Michael Osterholm, director for the Center of Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, told CNBC’s “Squawk Alley.” “It is happening.”

First there were the fake ballot drop boxes. Now, authorities in California are investigating a report of a phony, Republican-run voting site in an Orange County district where a GOP challenger holds a narrow lead over a Democratic congressman.

The county district attorney’s office sent investigators to the headquarters of the Republican vice mayor of the city of Westminster after voting-rights activists notified police on Election Day that they had discovered a handwritten sign saying “Vote Here” in front of the building, which was not listed as an official voting center.

The building, located in the city’s “Little Saigon” area, was, in fact, the dual headquarters of Vice Mayor Kimberly Ho’s (R) skincare company and her campaign for a seat on the Westminster city council.

President Trump said Monday that he has replaced Defense Secretary Mark Esper with Christopher C. Miller, the director of the National Counterterrorism Center.

Trump made the announcement on Twitter and said Miller will serve as acting Defense Secretary "effective immediately."

News reports based on unnamed sources in recent days said that Esper had planned to resign. He has clashed with the president, most notable not supporting Trump's use of insurrection act.

Democrat civil war heating up

As President-elect Joe Biden and his running mate Kamala Harris prepare to take power, we continue to look at the growing debate over the direction of the Democratic Party. House Majority Whip James Clyburn went on several Sunday talk shows to criticize calls to “defund the police” and argued the phrase hurt Democratic congressional candidates. “It is actually insane that we would think the way to respond to the scale of problems that we confront as a nation is to harken back to an older form of politics that … seems to try to triangulate and appeal to this Reagan Democrat that they are so obsessed with,” responds Eddie Glaude, author and chair of Princeton University’s Department of African American Studies. “It makes no sense that we would go back to the politics that produced Trump in the first place.” We also speak to artist and antiracist activist Bree Newsome Bass, who argues Black voters “are scapegoated when it’s convenient, and then we are thrown under the bus when it’s convenient … That’s a dynamic that has to end.”

Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez made it clear Monday that progressives would not sit back while President-elect Joe Biden filled a cabinet with moderates.

Following media projections that Biden would emerge the victor in the 2020 presidential election, Ocasio-Cortez specifically addressed claims that former Democratic Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel was under consideration for a role in the incoming Biden-Harris administration.
