Why do you think every government in the world, every government on this planet has vaults full of gold? You can't eat gold, you cannot fashion tools with gold, you cannot heal the sick or cause the lame to walk using gold. It is generally a worthless mineral. Yet it has been and still is highly coveted by the people of this planet. Only it's people, no other creature on this planet has a need, use or care for gold.
Have you ever noticed we do not fit in here? We are light years ahead of every other creature on the planet, technology wise. We move into an area, deplete it's resources, recreated it in our own image and spread out into other areas. In all areas where gold is found, it is quickly mined and consumed and comes to rest in a vault full of more eventually.

Yet still, we are far more intelligent than any other living creature. We have reached the edge of space. No other creature on this planet has yet to reach the stone age, with the possibly arguable point of primates and otters.
Why do we covet the gold? That is the question. We can make jewelry and circuitry from it. Decorate with it. That is it. Yet every government on the planet hoards it. It has held extreme value since the beginning of time, since we were first noted we've craved to hold gold.
