At a deeper level, its the expansion of the "shadow work" of the industrial economy that we have been born into. Its the unpaid work which an industrial society demands as a necessary complement to the production of goods and services. This kind of unpaid servitude does not contribute to subsistence. Quite the contrary, it ravages and will eventually overwelm subsistence.
