Global Board Member

Mark Malloch‐Brown is a former number two in the United Nations and has served in the British Cabinet and Foreign Office. He is active in business and international affairs, and serves on several nonprofit boards, including the International Crisis Group.

 

He is a senior advisor at Eurasia Group and serves on a number of global market commercial boards. He chairs Best for Britain, a group promoting debate on Britain’s relations with the European Union.

 

Malloch-Brown served as UN deputy secretary‐general and chief of staff under Kofi Annan. Before this, he was administrator of the UNDP, where he led global development efforts. He covered Africa and Asia as minister of state in the Foreign Office, and was a member of Gordon Brown's cabinet. Other positions have included World Bank vice president, lead international partner in a political consulting firm, and vice chairman of the World Economic Forum. He began his career as a journalist at the Economist.

 

Knighted for his contribution to international affairs, Malloch-Brown is a Distinguished Practitioner at Oxford University’s Blavatnik School of Government, an adjunct fellow at Chatham House’s Queen Elizabeth Program, and has been a visiting distinguished fellow at the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization.

Mark Malloch‐Brown has been engaged widely in government, international organizations, business, and civil society during his career. In addition to his role at the Eurasia Group, he currently serves on several commercial public boards and on the advisory boards of two private equity funds. He also serves on external advisory committees to the managing director of the IMF and to the executive director of UNICEF.

 

Mark served as deputy secretary‐general and earlier as chief of staff of the UN under Kofi Annan. For six years before that, he was administrator of the UN Development Programme, leading the UN's development efforts around the world. He was later minister of state in the UK foreign office, covering Africa and Asia, and sat in former prime minister Gordon Brown's cabinet. Other positions have included vice chairman of George Soros's investment funds, as well as his Open Society Institute, where he remains on the board. Mark has also served as a vice president at the World Bank, the lead international partner in a political consulting firm, and as vice chairman of the World Economic Forum. He began his career as a journalist at The Economist and subsequently ran refugee assistance programs around the world.

Mark also currently chairs or is on the board of several nonprofit boards including at the International Crisis Group, the UN Foundation, and BRAC. He formerly chaired the Business Commission on Sustainable Development and the Royal Africa Society and was on the board of Save the Children International. Mark is the author of “The Unfinished Global Revolution: The Limits of Nations and the Pursuit of a New Politics.”

Rt Hon Lord Mark Malloch-Brown KCMG is a former number two in the United Nations as well as having served in the British Cabinet and Foreign Office. He is active both in business and in the non-profit world, and also remains deeply involved in international affairs.

 

He is the Co-Chair of the UN Foundation Board of Directors and a Senior Advisor at Eurasia, engaging with its clients on questions of political risk. He serves on a number of commercial boards for business with global markets. He also chairs Best For Britain, an advocacy group engaged in the debate about Britain’s relations with the EU.

He was knighted in 2007 for his contribution to international affairs.

 

He is the author of “The Unfinished Global Revolution” that casts an autobiographical lens on the state of the world. In 2005 Time Magazine put him on its list of the 100 most influential people in the world. He continues to write, broadcast and lecture about international issues.
