i think the important distinction is between racial and prejudice.
if you prejudge someone regardless of their actions because of their race…. that is a bad thing.
however, noticing trends… specifically as it relates to past experience, and acting accordingly is wholly different.
if i walk past a group of young black guys on the street, my awareness spikes, and i proceed with caution. this is based on past experience and the obvious statistical likelihood that they are going to be a potential threat.
however, if i am in a situation like at work, and there is a new black employee. i will ALWAYS give the person an opportunity to earn my trust and respect… and i will not hate them regardless of their actions just because they happen to be black.
unfortunately, until young black males reduce their proneness to commit crimes including assault, and generally behavior more appropriately…. a certain amount of "racial caution" is going to exist… and it should.
it sucks for the well behaved black folks out there, but you can't blame people for survival instincts. one thing is certain….the demonizing of anyone who acts with "racially aware caution" needs to stop.
