If you've ever read Crime and Punishment the main character, Ralskolnikov is put in prison for murder. The reason he commits the murder is perfectly stupid. He doesn't even know the woman.
Basically he's read about some theory about a theoretical 'superman' that you can only become if you set certain worldly concerns aside, such as the value one might place upon another's life.
So Raskolnikov kills a woman in cold blood so as to demonstrate to himself or to become a sort of superman.
It has been a very long time since i read this book but i remember this part because the senselessness of it always bothered me. I suspect that for some, the Moloch sacrifices are a way of demonstrating a separation of themselves from the flies. How does a predator demonstrate that he is a predator?
