Republican Young Kim Wins California’s 39th District

Republican Young Kim defeated Democrat Incumbent Rep. Gil Cisneros, according to the Associated Press, becoming the second republican candidate to flip a Democratic-held seat in California.

The race was a rematch from 2018, when Cisneros defeated Kim, the Associated Press reported.

Kim joins California Congresswoman-elect Michelle Steel and Washington Congresswoman-elect Marilyn Strickland as the first Korean American women to be elected to Congress. Like Kim, Steel also flipped a Democratic-held seat in California’s 48th District.

Kim was born in South Korea and grew up in Guam. She’s a former state lawmaker who managed to overcome a Democratic registration edge in the district which includes portions of Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties, according to KSAT.

The former state politician ran on a mixed platform that includes keeping taxes low, increasing trade, protecting DACA recipients while also strengthening border security.

Kim and Steele’s win was a sharp contrast against the states general vote for President, where President Donald Trump received roughly one third of all California votes.

Pelosi Cancels ‘Super Spreader’ Dinner at Capitol After Backlash

No cake for Queen Pelosi tonight. It looks like the only item on her menu is a heaping serving of crow. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) was forced to cancel a lavish Friday night dinner at the Capitol for newly elected Democrat Members after a fierce backlash from supporters who criticized Pelosi for holding a large dinner while Americans are being told to cancel family holiday gatherings because of concerns about spreading the COVID-19 China coronavirus.

Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill announced the dinner was canceled after previously responding to critics by saying that a carryout option would be provided, “Members-elect are now picking up their boxed meals and departing the Capitol. There is no group dinner. Members-elect are in DC already for orientation.”

— Drew Hammill (@Drew_Hammill) November 14, 2020

“Our office strictly follows the guidance of the Office of Attending Physician, including for this dinner. To be a further model for the nation, this event has been modified to allow Members-elect to pick up their meals to go in a socially-distanced manner.”

— Drew Hammill (@Drew_Hammill) November 13, 2020

Hammill was responding to a report by NBC’s Leigh Ann Caldwell on the dinner that included a photo of the lavish set-up and a defensive comment by Pelosi, “House Dem and GOP leaders are holding respective dinners for new members. @SpeakerPelosi told me it’s safe. “It’s very spaced,” she said and there is enhanced ventilation and the Capitol physician signed off.”

Pelosi’s hypocrisy was accentuated by a tweet earlier Friday by the House Democrats urging Americans to stay home, “We are in this together. Protect yourself and loved ones. Continue to #StayAtHome, practice social distancing and #WearAMask.”

Yahoo News reporter Hunter Walker noted Pelosi sent an email to her constituents around the time of her planned dinner urging them to “crush the virus”, “As she convenes an indoor dinner for new House members, Nancy Pelosi just sent an email to her constituents that says, “We must still work to crush the virus with the … mask wearing and social distancing that are essential to preventing tens of thousands of needless deaths.”

There is no word on whether the Republicans held their planned dinner Friday night. However, being that the GOP has generally been the party of letting Americans decide for themselves on the coronavirus, the backlash of hypocrisy has fallen on Pelosi and the Democrats for urging Americans to stay home and cancel family holiday gatherings while planning to hold a large, lavish indoor dinner in Washington, D.C.

Oregon Democrat Governor Kate Brown Orders New Onerous Lockdown; Will Be Enforced By Police

Clinging to delusions of serving in a fantasy Biden administration, Oregon governor Kate Brown has announced a new round of COVID lockdowns that are even more onerous than the ones she’d put in place earlier in the year. Brown vows that this time, the police will enforce her edicts.

Willamette Week reports:

Gov. Kate Brown announced today she’s imposing a two-week “freeze” on many activities in Oregon because of the sharp increase in COVID-19 infections.

The new restrictions, which go into effect Nov. 18, include restricting bars and restaurants to takeout only, limiting in-home gatherings to six people from no more than two families, capping grocery and retail stores to 75% of capacity, and limiting attendance at churches to no more than 25 people indoors or 50 outside.

“Since I announced a Two-Week Pause one week ago, we are seeing an alarming spike in both cases and hospitalizations,” said Governor Brown. “The virus is spreading in the community and, every day, it is infecting more and more Oregonians. This situation is dangerous and our hospitals have been sounding the alarms. If we want to give Oregon a fighting chance, we must take further measures to flatten the curve and save lives. I know this is hard, and we are weary. But, we are trying to stop this ferocious virus from quickly spreading far and wide. And in Oregon, we actually can do this.

“Given the data and modeling we are seeing, my public health experts tell me that some counties will need longer to flatten the curve. So I want to be very clear that there are some COVID-19 hotspot counties that will likely need to stay in the Freeze for much longer than two weeks. Multnomah County, for example, will be in this Freeze for at least four weeks. Our actions right now, no matter where in the state you live, are critical.”

The Two-Week Freeze measures include:

• Limiting social get-togethers (indoors and outdoors) to no more than six people, total, from no more than two households.

• Limiting faith-based organizations to a maximum of 25 people indoors or 50 people outdoors.

• Limiting eating and drinking establishments to take-out and delivery only.

• Closing gyms and fitness organizations.

• Closing indoor recreational facilities, museums, indoor entertainment activities, and indoor pools and sports courts.

• Closing zoos, gardens, aquariums, outdoor entertainment activities, and outdoor pools.

• Limiting grocery stores and pharmacies to a maximum of 75% capacity and encouraging curbside pickup.

• Limiting retail stores and retail malls (indoor and outdoor) to a maximum of 75% capacity and encouraging curbside pickup.

• Closing venues (that host or facilitate indoor or outdoor events).

• Requiring all businesses to mandate work-from-home to the greatest extent possible and closing offices to the public.

• Prohibiting indoor visiting in long-term care facilities (outdoor visitation permitted for supporting quality of life).

The Two-Week Freeze does not apply to or change current health and safety protocols for personal services (such as barber shops, hair salons, and non-medical massage therapy), congregate homeless sheltering, outdoor recreation and sports, youth programs, childcare, K-12 schools, K-12 sports currently allowed, current Division 1 and professional athletics exemptions, and higher education — all of which can continue operating under previous guidance issued by the Oregon Health Authority.

D.C. Mayor Puts New Virus Testing Rules in Place Ahead of Trump Rally, Defends Her Trip to ‘High Risk’ Delaware

Thousands of President Donald Trump supporters who believe voting irregularities could prevent his second term are gathering in Washington, DC, at noon on Saturday at Freedom Plaza for a #StoptheSteal election rally, and Mayor Muriel Bowser is not exactly rolling out the welcome mat.

Fox News reported on the Bowser’s response to the event:

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said Tuesday that her team was monitoring reports about a group of people from different states in the South planning on driving to D.C. this weekend. Nevertheless, the Democratic mayor, a staunch critic of President Trump, told a news conference that her office still recommended that businesses remove plywood coverings from their windows that were initially set in place in anticipation of election-related unrest last week if Joe Biden was not declared the victor.

“We continue to follow those activities and be prepared for those activities,” Bowser said, according to WUSA. “Our police chief will have a similar posture this weekend as he did last week and we will be there to support peaceful exercise of First Amendment demonstrations.”

Ironically, Bowser visited one of the 48 states that she announced on Monday would require people coming from those states to the District to be tested before traveling and three days after arriving.

Bowser traveled last weekend to Delaware after some media outlets declared that former Vice President Joe Biden had won the presidential race, the New York Post reported:

Washington, DC, Mayor Muriel Bowser traveled to Delaware to congratulate President-elect Joe Biden on his win, and then quickly defended as “necessary” her jaunt to a state she designated as high-risk amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“I do a lot of things to advance the interests of the District of Columbia, and some of them are formal, and some of them are informal, but all of them are necessary,” Bowser told reporters Tuesday, NBC Washington reported.

The Democratic mayor said her trip to Wilmington on Saturday was official government business and exempt from the DC travel advisory that lists Delaware as a high-risk state amid the pandemic.

The rally, meanwhile, is a grassroots event where a coalition of Trump supporters decided they needed to fight back against what is taking place with voting in some states.

Gov. Cuomo: Trump Refusal to Concede the ‘Height of Irresponsibility and Narcissism’

Governor Andrew Cuomo (D-NY) said Friday on CNN’s “Situation Room” President Donald Trump’s decision not to concede the presidential election to Joe Biden was “the height of irresponsibility and narcissism.”

When asked about Trump’s refusal to concede, Cuomo said, “That is his delusion. That is just his dislocation from reality. It’s shameful what he has done, Wolf. This transition was probably one of the most important transitions ever, right? We’re dealing with coronavirus. The numbers are going up. We have to have the Biden team hit the road running. There should be no gap in the baton pass. And for him not to have the Biden people in an orderly transition is just the height of irresponsibility and narcissism.”

He continued, “The states really did all the work, as you know, on COVID. All the president did was point to the states and said, ‘You’re in charge. So we are working with the Biden administration. It’s shameful that he is still in denial. The numbers couldn’t be any clearer. And that he’s not doing a transition — it’s just inexcusable.”

He added, “And then to try to cast doubt on our democracy and our electoral process with no evidence whatsoever, it’s just more division; more negativity that has corroded this country for four years.”

Saudi Crown Prince Vows "Iron Fist" Against Extremists Targeting Western Interests

On Wednesday of this week a terror attack targeted a World War I commemoration event in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia resulting in several people wounded. The ceremony was attended by Western diplomats at a French Catholic cemetery on the occasion of European countries observing Armistice day or Remembrance day, November 11, which this year marked 102 years since the end of the war.

The Islamic State terror group has since claimed it was behind the IED attack, with its propaganda arm Amaq describing the attack which "primarily targeted the French consul". However, there's been nothing that's clearly validated that ISIS conducted it. Two weeks prior to this, a guard protecting the French consulate in Jeddah was injured during a knife attack which appeared "retaliation" for controversial statements made by President Emmanuel Macron in the wake of recent terrorism targeting French citizens.

In response, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MbS) has vowed to strike at extremist targets with an "iron fist".

Riyadh's prime security interests have also been to protect the kingdom given any major terror attack could severely disrupt deepening Western economic ties and major infrastructure projects on Saudi soil.

News anchor suspended for complaining that 2020 'took' Alex Trebek, but not Mitch McConnell

Not funny

A veteran news anchor has been suspended after complaining on social media that 2020 "took" recently departed "Jeopardy!" host Alex Trebek while Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell remains among the living.

What are the details?

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that WITI-TV anchor Ted Perry was pulled off the air after he wrote in a now-deleted Facebook post: "2020 takes Alex Trebek but leaves Mitch McConnell? Just end already."

The outlet further reported:

Perry, who has been at the Milwaukee station since 1993, came under sharp criticism from conservatives and others for his inappropriate and partisan joke about the Kentucky Republican. McConnell was just re-elected earlier this month to his seventh term in the U.S. Senate.

A number of people on social media suggested Perry should lose his job while a few others thought he should have the right to express his political views.

According to the New York Post, "Perry apologized for the post, which led to blowback both on Facebook and Twitter, including from conservatives who said the comment revealed the anchor's 'bias,' while others called for him to be fired. Hours later, he took it down."

Perry's post was made as fans continue to mourn the beloved Trebek, who passed away days ago after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

It also comes as the nation awaits the final results of a contested presidential election and the prospect of Democrats controlling the House, Senate, and White House, while McConnell, 78 — who sparked health concerns due to visible bruising in recent weeks — could end up being the most powerful Republican in Washington.

President Donald Trump is fighting back against mainstream media's widespread declaration that Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has won the presidency. Meanwhile, Democrats maintained their control of the House, and the fate of the Senate is up the air.

If Biden is indeed inaugurated, but at least one of the two remaining Senate runoff races in Georgia is won by a Republican, McConnell will stand as the GOP's foremost elected leader.

VICTOR JOECKS: Clark County election officials accepted my signature — on 8 ballot envelopes

Clark County election officials accepted my signature on eight ballot return envelopes during the general election. It’s more evidence that signature verification is a flawed security measure.

For months, election officials have told Nevadans not to worry about ballots piling up in apartment trash cans or sent to wrong addresses.

“Discarded mail ballots cannot just be picked up and voted by anyone,” a fact sheet from the secretary of state’s office says.

“All mail ballots must be signed on the ballot return envelope. This signature is used to authenticate the voter and confirm that it was actually the voter and not another person who returned the mail ballot.”

I wanted to test that claim by simulating what might happen if someone returned ballots that didn’t belong to him or her. Plenty of people had this opportunity. Billy Geurin, a 10-year Las Vegas resident, found five loose ballots in his apartment mailroom. A reader emailed me a picture of a pile of mail on the side of the road, which included loose ballots. There are numerous pictures of similar examples on social media.

Nine people participated in this test. I wrote their names in cursive using my normal handwriting. They then copied my version of their name onto their ballot envelope. This two-step process was necessary to ensure no laws were broken.

On Monday, I asked Clark County Registrar Joe Gloria about this scenario. If ballots signed by someone else “came through, we would still have the signature match to rely on for identity,” he said. Asked if he was confident the safeguard would identify those ballots, he said, “I’m confident that the process has been working throughout this process.”

He was wrong. Eight of the nine ballots went through. In other words, signature verification had an 89 percent failure rate in catching mismatched signatures.

This could explain how a ballot “signed” by Rosemarie Hartle, who died in 2017, made it through signature verification, as reported by 8 News Now. It could explain how Jill Stokke, a longtime Las Vegas resident, was told the signature on her ballot matched, even though she said she never received it.

County officials aren’t working proactively to determine whether unscrupulous actors abused this vulnerability in a widespread fashion. Gloria’s office doesn’t “have an investigatory team.” He said his office catches fraudulent votes “when they’re reported to us.” So if a criminal doesn’t admit he committed voter fraud, Clark County is unlikely to find out about it. Willful ignorance isn’t an election security strategy.

Leave aside the presidential race. Fewer than 200 votes separate the leading candidates in Senate District 5. In 2018, state Sen. Keith Pickard won his race by 24 votes. Even small amounts of fraud can swing results.

It’s unclear how much voter fraud took place in Nevada. But it’s clear signature verification isn’t the fail-safe security check elections officials made it out to be.

Computer Science Professor Warned About Voting Machine Security Flaws In 2017

Professor Andrew Appel of Princeton University spoke to Congress about how electronic voting machines can be easily hacked to manipulate vote counts.

Mr. Appel stated in a testimony, “I don’t represent my employer [Princeton]. I’m here to give my own professional opinions as a scientist, but also as an American citizen who cares deeply about protecting our democracy. My research is in software verification, computer security, technology policy, and election machinery. As I will explain, I strongly recommend that, at a minimum, the Congress seek to ensure the elimination of direct recording electronic voting machines, sometimes called touch screen machines.”

The professor continued, “Installing new software in a voting machine is not really much different from installing new software in any other kind of computer. Installing new software is how you hack a voting machine to cheat. In 2009, in the courtroom of the Superior Court of New Jersey, I demonstrated how to hack a voting machine. I wrote a vote-stealing computer program that shifts votes from one candidate to another. Installing a vote-stealing program and a voting machine takes seven minutes per machine with a screwdriver. I did this in a secure facility and I’m confident my program has not leaked out to affect real elections.”

Mr. Appel also said, “But really, the software I built was not rocket science, any computer programmer could write the same code. Once it’s installed, it could steal elections without detection for years to come. Voting machines are often delivered to polling places several days before the election to elementary schools, churches, firehouses. In these locations, anyone could gain access to a voting machine for 10 minutes. Between elections, the machines are routinely opened up for maintenance by county employees or private contractors. Let’s assume they have the utmost integrity. But still, in the U.S., we try to run our elections so that we can trust the election results without relying on any one individual. Other computer scientists have demonstrated similar hacks on many models of machine. This is not just one glitch in one manufacturer’s machine. It’s the very nature of computers. So how can we trust our elections when it’s so easy to make the computers cheat? 40 states already know the answer. Vote on optical scan paper ballots.”

Professor Appel urged election officials to opt for a system that uses backup paper ballots to verify machine counted votes.

He also opposed connecting voting machines to the internet which exposes machines to foreign and domestic hacking.

Professor Appel’s solution, “So what must we do? In the near term, we must not connect the voting machines to the Internet. The same goes for those computers used to prepare the electronic ballot definition files before each election that are used to program the voting machines. That is, we must not connect the voting machines, even indirectly, to the Internet. Many able and competent election administrators already follow this best practice. I hope that all nine or ten thousand counties and states that run elections follow this practice and other security best practices, but it’s hard to tell whether they do consistently. So what we must do as soon as possible after November is to adopt a nationwide, what 40 states have already done, paper ballots marked by the voter, countable by computer, but recountable by hand.”
