Pa. nearly finished with election counting — no recount expected

With Pennsylvania’s counting nearly done on Friday afternoon, it’s clear no statewide race will be within the half-percent margin that triggers a recount, Secretary of State Kathy Boockvar said.

That includes the race for president, in which Joe Biden was leading President Donald Trump by about 59,000 votes on Friday afternoon, and races for attorney general, auditor general and state treasurer.

Democrat Josh Shapiro was re-elected as attorney general, while Republicans Timothy DeFoor and Stacy Garrity won the races for auditor general and treasurer.

Boockvar said more than half of 100,000 provisional ballots remained to be counted as of mid-afternoon Friday.

Also unfinished was counting of 28,529 military and overseas absentee ballots. The deadline for receiving those ballots was Nov. 10.

Beyond those ballots, the department of state said in the news release that about 10,000 mail-in ballots were received between Election Day on Nov. 3 and 5 p.m. on Nov. 6. Those are the ballots that are allowed to be accepted under a window approved by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court to compensate for slow mail delivery. Trump and Republicans have appealed that decision to the U.S. Supreme Court, prompting Boockvar to order counties to keep those ballots separate in case of a successful challenge.

Boockvar said Friday the number that arrived during the window, and other uncounted ballots, aren’t enough to change the election results or make it close enough to trigger a recount.
