I really suspect they did some mind control on all those astronauts to make them truly believe things that weren't true. They mostly came back acting badly–almost all got divorced. Saw a program where the former wives all have annual reunions because they shared a particular experience of watching their "hero" husbands turn into insufferable asses. Aldrin seems to be more functional to this day than the rest, but he believes in aliens and I'm pretty sure that's what he wants to declass, and I'm pretty sure it's something they implanted in his mind.
