15 Novr 1864 Sherman begins his "March to the Sea" - #CivilWar #Armyhistory

Sherman captured the major Confederate railway hub and industrial center of Atlanta on 2 Sep 1864. He believed in a "total war" philosophy that meant destroying the Souths economic ability to wage war.

Starting on 15 Nov 1864, Sherman led his Union Army of 62K Soldiers on a 285 march from Atlanta to Savannah split in two wings 30 miles apart. Their purpose was to destroy the civilians will to support the War, to “make old and young, rich and poor, feel the hard hand of war.”

Along the way, they stole or slaughtered farm animals, destroyed rail roads and burned anything that could provide support to the south. They eventually arrived in Savannah on 21 Dec 1864 to a city that was undefended since the Confederate forces fled ahead of Sherman's arrival.
