Not to experience, no, but to keep it within boundaries and understand cause and effect. If one only ever experiences joy, one never understands how one's actions can cause pain. So they act without thought and reason. Being a masochist, personally I believe the entire reason and point is pain and suffering. The joy and pleasure is to keep us from going insane and ending it prematurely.
