Crashes down nationally, fatalities linked to more substance use

DENVER (KDVR) – Crashes are down nationwide, but the number of fatalities leads national researchers to pinpoint lax personal safety standards and substance use as yet more COVID-19 hazards.

A crash Monday morning claimed two lives on Interstate 225

According to national data, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports traffic deaths decreased nationwide during 2019 as compared to 2018. There were 36,096 fatalities in motor vehicle traffic crashes in 2019, down 2% from 2018.

As COVID-19 clamped down on travel, crash fatalities continued to decline.

The second quarter of 2020, which encompasses the months of April-July, showed8,870 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes, a decrease of about 3.3% from the same quarter last year.

However, fatalities in the second quarter of 2020 went past projections. These involved the same set of circumstances – lack of seatbelts, speeding and impaired driving.

Apart from the national dip in safety belt adherence, the NHTSA points to specifically Colorado information to describe impaired driving.

Researchers have noted several jumps in the percentage of traffic fatalities that involve substances. From the time before the pandemic to the second quarter of 2020, fatalities that tested positive for alcohol, cannabinoids and opioids rose by 6%, 10% and 5%, respectively.

As morepeople have admitted to increasing their substance intake to deal with COVID-19 pressures, this becomes a traffic concern specific to states where cannabis is legal.

Indeed, the number of substance positives in national traffic deaths tracks alongside substance sale numbers. Colorado Department of Revenue figures show 2020 alcohol revenues and state retail marijuana sales tax revenue rose higher during the pandemic than the months prior and in 2019.At the same time, opioid overdose signs have increased.

In its lawsuit against Colorado Judicial Watch argues:

A 2019 study showed that 40 of Colorado’s 64 counties had voter registration rates exceeding 100% of the eligible citizen voting-age population. The share of Colorado counties with registration rates exceeding 100% was the highest in the nation.

A study from last month confirmed that as many as39 Colorado counties had registration rates exceeding 100%at any one time during the relevant reporting period.

Data Colorado itself provided to the federal Election Assistance Commission (EAC) showed that Colorado was lagging in the processing and removal of certain classes of ineligible registrations belonging to those who had moved out of state.

In eight Colorado counties, more than one in six registrations belonged to an inactive voter.

Judicial Watch notes that registration rates over 100%, poor processing of out-of-date registrations, and high levels of inactive registrations “indicate an ongoing, systemic problem with Colorado’s voter listmaintenance efforts.” Colorado’s “failure to comply with their … voter list maintenance obligations” injures lawfully registered voters by “undermining their confidence in the integrity of the electoral process, discouraging their participation in the democratic process, and instilling in them the fear that their legitimate votes will be nullified or diluted.”

Judicial Watch has asked the court to declare that Colorado and its Secretary of State are violating the NVRAand to order them to “develop and implement a general program that makes a reasonable effort to remove the registrations of ineligible registrants from the voter rolls in Colorado …”

“It is a direct threat to free and fair electionsthat with record numbers of mail-in ballots this cycle, over half of Colorado counties have more people registered to vote than are eligible to register,” said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton. “With its inaction, Colorado has failed its citizens and opened itself up to potentially be the victim of massive voter fraud.”
