The New World Order That President Biden Will Inherit

The importance of vision, expertise, honesty and simple decency in the management of world affairs cannot be overstated.

President-elect Joe Biden has signaled that he will move swiftly to restore dignity to the badly sullied image of the United States; respect for the professionals of America’s diplomatic, intelligence and military services; and a more predictable, nuanced and sympathetic approach to foreign relations. That message of a restoration of norms is likely to resonate in many capitals around the world, as it did with an electorate that gave Mr. Biden a decisive victory over Donald Trump.

There is much that Mr. Biden can do in his first 100 days. He has already vowed to promptly rejoin the Paris accord on climate change and to make climate action central to his administration. He has declared his intention to restore the United States’ relationship with the World Health Organization, signaling that the United States will join forces with the rest of the world to halt the rampage of the coronavirus.

Mr. Biden is also expected to organize a summit of democracies, and to recommit the United States to exposing human rights abuses wherever they arise, whether in China, Russia, Saudi Arabia or Turkey. At the same time, he will seek ways to revive the nuclear deal with Iran, and agree with Russia to extend the New START treaty on limiting strategic nuclear arms. Hopefully, Mr. Biden will terminate American support for Saudi Arabia’s terrible war in Yemen.

These are all welcome signs of America’s imminent return to a role in the world that better reflects our historical values.

Alberta has reported 0 cases of influenza so far this season

There have been no lab-confirmed cases of influenza reported in Alberta so far this flu season.

Weekly data released by Alberta Health Services Thursday showed there have been zero lab-confirmed cases of influenza and no hospitalizations yet this season.

Dr. Grace Salvo, a medical officer of health with Alberta Health Services, said the data doesn’t necessarily mean there is no influenza circulating in Alberta, it means that it hasn’t yet been detected.

She stressed that every season, the flu comes at different times, “so it’s only a matter of time before we start seeing it in our population.”

“Every year, the influenza changes a little bit and that’s why every year people need to get re-vaccinated. So we’re expecting that eventually influenza will come, as it comes every year, and it’ll probably be a little bit different than last year,” Salvo explained.

Grammy Award-winning singer Erykah Badu revealed on Friday that she received significantly inconsistent coronavirus test results, testing positive for the virus in her left nostril and negative in her right.

“No symptoms. Was tested for COVID. Same machine. Left nostril positive. Right nostril negative,” the “Next Lifetime” singer said in a tweet to her 2.7 million Twitter followers. “Maybe they need to call Swiss Beats so they can do a versus between them. Funny thing is, Dr. ONLY reported the positive result. What the fack is goin on here. Rapid Test. $$$$ smh.”

In Trump’s final days, a 30-year-old aide purges officials seen as insufficiently loyal

Over the past week, President Donald Trump has axed his defense secretary and other top Pentagon aides, his second-in-command at the U.S. Agency for International Development, two top Homeland Security officials, a senior climate scientist and the leader of the agency that safeguards nuclear weapons.

Engineering much of the post-election purge is Johnny McEntee, a former college quarterback who was hustled out of the White House two years ago after a security clearance check turned up a prolific habit for online gambling.

A staunch Trump loyalist, McEntee, 30, was welcomed back into the fold in February and installed as personnel director for the entire U.S. government. Since the race was called for President-elect Joe Biden, McEntee has been distributing pink slips, warning federal workers not to cooperate with the Biden transition and threatening to oust people who show disloyalty by job hunting while Trump is still refusing to acknowledge defeat, according to six administration officials.

More firings are expected, White House and agency officials said, including a top cybersecurity official whose agency on Thursday disputed Trump’s unfounded claims of election fraud. While the motives are not always clear - is the White House pursuing last-minute policy goals or simply punishing disloyalty? - critics say the dismissals threaten to destabilize broad swaths of the federal bureaucracy in the fragile period during the handover to the next administration.

McEntee is not just firing people. The Pentagon general counsel this week hired former Republican operative and political appointee Michael Ellis as general counsel of the National Security Agency, making him a civilian member of the senior executive service. That gives Ellis civil service protections that will make it hard for Biden’s team to push him out. Several officials said McEntee also wants to help campaign allies secure jobs in the White House.

Some officials said they worry the new hires could destroy briefing documents prepared for the incoming Biden administration. Others criticized McEntee’s choices for key government roles.
